Esta curta-metragem é uma experiência e uma amostra das possibilidades do ASMR (resposta sensorial meridiana autónoma) desencadeado pelo contacto entre humanos e plantas, filmada no jardim concebido e cultivado pela artista durante a sua residência, entre março e maio de 2025.
O ASMR é um termo usado para descrever um fenómeno fisiológico específico, experienciado por algumas pessoas em resposta a certos estímulos auditivos e/ou visuais; geralmente manifesta-se como uma sensação agradável de formigueiro que começa no topo da cabeça e pode estender-se pelo pescoço, ombros e braços.
Em «Posso tocar-te?», folhas, caules, flores e frondes são acariciados, girados, esfregados, torcidos e puxados numa interação exploratória e não intencional entre corpos humanos e vegetais; por sua vez, isto pode despertar no espectador sensações agradáveis, relaxantes ou soporíferas.
A artista levanta a hipótese de que a vicariância implícita no ASMR se aplica igualmente aos seres humanos que interagem com espécies não humanas. Além disso, receber cuidados ou atenção próxima (uma impressão comum que provavelmente provoca a resposta) também se aplica ao reino vegetal. Como tal, existe um vasto potencial para a troca sensorial e empática em tais encontros.
This short film is an experiment with, and taster of, the possibilities for ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) as triggered by human – plant touch, filmed in the garden designed and grown by the artist during her March-May 2025 residency.
ASMR is a term used to describe a particular physiological phenomenon experienced by some people in response to certain auditory and/or visual stimuli; it is usually experienced as a pleasurable tingling sensation starting at the crown of the head which may extend to the neck, shoulders and arms.
In “Can I touch you?”, leaves, stems, flowers and fronds are stroked, twirled, rubbed, tweaked, pulled, and caressed in an exploratory, non-intentional, interplay between human and plant bodies; in turn this may arouse in the viewer pleasant, relaxing or soporific sensations.
The artist hypothesises that the vicariousness implicit in ASMR equally applies to humans interacting with non human species; further, receiving care or close personal attention (a common imprint likely causing the response) also pertains to the plant realm; as such, there is a multitude of potential for sensorial and empathic exchange in such encounters.

Crystal Mallon Kershaw, nascida em 1982 em Manchester, Reino Unido, é uma artista que vive no SW Alentejo, Portugal, desde 2017. Tem um Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (Camberwell College of Arts, UAL) e uma licenciatura em Literatura Inglesa (King’s College London), e é membro satélite do Ateneu do Catorze, um coletivo de artistas em São Luís, Odemira.
Vivendo em diferentes ambientes naturais, o seu trabalho é guiado pela paisagem local, utilizando frequentemente materiais sazonais de origem botânica, com resultados – frequentemente esculturas ou instalações – essencialmente temporários e experienciáveis. Desde que renovou o seu próprio terreno em Portugal, o trabalho de Crystal tem vindo a evoluir cada vez mais para o uso de formas vivas e em crescimento, usando plantas e explorando a interação entre espaços cultivados e selvagens.
Crystal Mallon Kershaw, born 1982 Manchester, UK, is an arts practitioner living in SW Alentejo, Portugal, since 2017. She holds a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (Camberwell College of Arts, UAL) and a BA English Literature (Kings College London) and is a satellite member of Ateneu do Catorze, an artist collective in São Luis, Odemira.
While living in different natural environments, her site-responsive work is led by the local landscape, frequently using seasonal materials of botanical origin, with outcomes – often sculpture or installation – mainly temporal and experiential in essence. Since renovating her own land in Portugal, Crystal’s work is increasingly shifting to the use of live and growing forms using plants, exploring the interplay between cultivated and wild spaces.
