During the three weeks of Summer School Elements of Care, which took place in July 2021, the participants held together a blog to record the activities carried out, places they visited, pictures and individual texts about the learning and the whole experience.

Elements of Care
PT// Desde 1800 a população humana tem vindo a crescer sem tréguas. O conceito Romântico de natureza tornou-se alheio. Quase nenhuma parte do “mundo natural” escapou ao nosso toque. Microplásticos são encontrados no Antártico ou até mesmo nos pontos mais recondidos do fundo do oceano. Quais são as nossas responsabilidades no cuidado do nosso planeta envenenado? Quais são as consequências das nossas políticas pós-humanas tanto no planeta como nos nossos corpos? Humanos e Natureza tornaram-se inextricavelmente misturados. O nosso desperdício habita nos corpos de outras criaturas (e nos nossos); mas descobrimos agora que os nossos próprios corpos não são singulares, mas sim uma multitude microbial.
Como é que os artistas combinam conhecimento e processo cientifico com estéticas de preocupação para encorajar uma mentalidade de inter-ação entre humanos e não humanos. O curso irá explorar as escritas de Donna Haraway, Karen Barad, Heather Davis e ainda Mary Magic, Špela Petrič, Saša Spačal e outros, para propor novas condutas artísticas ligadas a estas questões. (Regine Rapp E Christian de Lutz). A intersecção entre Arte, Biologia e Ambiente oferecem oportunidades únicas para os artistas visuais. Este curso de verão inovativo que conta já com a sua quarta edição, abre uma oportunidade aos não especialistas para adquirir capacidades teórica e prática em biologia e ciências ambientais em conexão nas artes visuais.
A Summer School explora a relação interdisciplinar entre a arte, a vida e as ciências ambientais através de exercícios “hands on”, combinando teoria e prática num ambiente informal: ex.: seminários, debates, visitas e criação de peças com matéria biológica.
Este ano a Summer School tem uma noticia! Temos uma parceria entre a nossa Summer School e o Summer Lab no Hangar! (www.hangar.org) O Summer Lab é um programa de seis dias que decorre em Julho de 2021, composto por uma série de atividades teóricas e práticas num regime intensivo: seminários, práticas no biolab, leituras e expedições entre outras atividdades. Este SummerLab procura facilitar o diálogo entre diferentes áreas de conhecimento/prática e contextos sociais, diluindo a distância entre artistas, curadores, cientistas, investigadores e agentes sociais. Através da estrutura oferecida por um programa intensivo e transdisciplinar, serão gerados espaços de conhecimento transversal onde os participantes serão considerados como produtores deste conhecimento. Para aqueles que quiserem participar em ambos haverá uma taxa extra para cobrir os custos de acomodação e estadia em Barcelona. Os custos de voo estão à responsabilidade de cada participante e as datas correspondem à segunda edição da Summer School da Cultivamos Cultura (por favor contactem-nos para mais detalhes através do email info@cultivamoscultura.org).
As atividades da Summer School na Cultivamos Cultura vão focar-se nas questões da representatividade da tecnologia e ciencia, preocupações éticas e na evolução da bioart enquanto fenómeno cultural. É um programa de uma semana com a oportunidade de estender a estadia mais uma ou duas semanas para desenvolver um projecto num ambiente colaborativo.
A componente prática desenvolve-se através de exercícios hands on no laboratório, workshop e em ambiente natural. A possibilidade de transformar conceitos abstratos em objetos de arte, a coleção e seleção de organismos para propósticos artísticos terá destaque durante a formação e finalmente, visitas até diferentes partes do parque natural.
O curso é aberto a atividades informais e um programa cultural e social. O custo é de 700€ pela primeira semana e 600€ para as duas semanas seguintes opcionais. O preço inclui acomodação na Cultivamos Cultura (Uma casa de campo), refeições, educação e outros materiais para o curso; de 5 de Julho a 9 de Julho para a primeira semana, e 12-16 de Julho para a segunda semana, 19-23 de Julho para a terceira (fins de semana estão incluídos entre o curso e serão dedicados à socialização e atividades lúdicas).

ENG// Since 1800 human population has grown seven-fold. The Romantic concept of nature has become extraneous. Almost no part of the “natural world”; has escaped our touch. Microplastics are found in the Antarctic or at the deepest points of the oceans. What are our special responsibilities for caring for a poisoned planet? What are the results of our posthuman ecologies on both the planet and our own bodies? Human and nature have become inextricably mixed. Our waste inhabits the bodies of other creatures (and our own); but we now discover our own bodies are not singular, but microbial multitudes.
How can artists combine scientific knowledge and process with an aesthetics of care to encourage sense of human/nonhuman intra-action. The course will explore the writing of Donna Haraway, Karen Barad, Heather Davis a.o., as well as the art of Mary Magic, Špela Petrič, Saša Spačal and others, to propose new artistic approaches related to these issues. (Regine Rapp and Christian de Lutz) The intersection of Art, Biology and the Environment offer unique opportunities to visual artists. This innovative summer course, which is already on its fourth edition, will allow non-specialists to acquire theoretical and practical skills in biological and environmental sciences in connection to the visual arts.
The Summer School explores the interdisciplinary relationship between art, life and environmental sciences through hands-on exercises, combining theory and practice in an informal environment, e.g.: seminars, debates, visits, and the creation of artworks with biological media.
This year’s Summer School has an extra piece of news! We are partnering up our Summer School with the Summer Lab at Hangar! (www.hangar.org) Summer Lab is A six-day programme taking place during July (2021) composed by a series of intensive theoretical and/or practical activities: seminars, biolab practices, lectures or expeditions among others activities. The summer lab seeks to facilitate dialogue between different areas of knowledge/practice and social contexts, diluting the distance that often occurs between artist, curators, scientists, researchers and/or social agents. Through the structure offered by an intensive transdisciplinary program, spaces of transversal knowledge will be generated where where all participants will be considered as producers of transversal knowledge.
For those of you who would like to do both there will be an extra fee to cover the costs of accommodation and boarding during the time in Barcelona. The flight expenses are at your own responsibility, the dates for the trip to Barcelona will be during the second week of Summer School in Cultivamos Cultura (please contact us for more details at info@cultivamoscultura.org)
The activities in the Summer School at Cultivamos Cultura will address issues such as the cultural representations of technology and science, ethical concerns and the evolution of bioart as a cultural phenomenon. One week program with the opportunity to extend the stay for one or two additional weeks to develop an art project in a collaborative environment. The practical component will focus on hands-on exercises in the laboratory, workshop, and within the natural environment. The possibility of transforming abstract concepts into art objects, the collection and selection of organisms for artistic purposes will be highlighted, and, finally, visits to different parts of the natural park, will take place.
The course will leave plenty of room for informal activities, and a cultural and social program.
The cost will be 700€ for the first week and 600€ for the optional 2 weeks after. The price includes accommodation at Cultivamos Cultura (a farmhouse), meals, tuition and general consumables for the course; from 5th July to 9th July for the first week and 12-16 July for the second week and 19-23 July for the third week (weekends are included between course weeks and will be dedicated to socialising and leisure activities).
