O Arte Institute e a iniciativa RHI, em parceria com a Cultivamos Cultura, têm o prazer de apresentar um painel de discussão, no âmbito do FACTT 20/21 – Improbable Times, com Eva Bubla, da Hungria, e Irena Agrivina, da Indonésia. Este painel vai focar-se na sua atividade e na colaboração que têm vindo a desenvolver em conjunto, revelando o impacto internacional destas formas de ativismo, que provêm do trabalho com comunidades locais. Este evento vai decorrer no dia 28 de Junho, às 10h Toronto/ 15h Lisboa/ 16h Hungria/ 21h Yogyakarta, e foi concebido pela curadora independente do FACTT Nina Czegledy.

Apresentação por EVA BUBLA

Os desafios sociais e ecológicos dos tempos recentes questionaram o papel e a responsabilidade dos artistas e dos agentes culturais. Vários artistas abordaram questões atuais ao imaginar novas formas de viver em prol de um futuro mais sustentável, tentando despoletar transformações sociais, uma mudança de valores, alterações em questões ambientais, ou uma mudança crucial de sistema. Será a arte capaz de fazer a diferença? Os casos de estudo apresentados vão abranger alguns dos projetos de Eva Bubla, individuais e colaborativos, estratégias artísticas e práticas coletivas, e o potencial da arte enquanto um catalisador. Enquanto uma artista, ativista e educadora, o trabalho da Eva articula preocupações sociais e ecológicas atuais que estão interligadas a comunidades e ambientes específicos. Na fronteira entre a arte e a ciência, os seus projetos pretendem consciencializar sobre os vários desafios adjacentes à sustentabilidade, numa tentativa de catalisar mudanças de atitude e ação. Eva está interessada em trabalhar em conjunto com comunidades locais e outros setores; estas formas de interseções definem se um objeto, uma instalação, uma performance, um workshop, uma discussão ou um festival podem surgir.

Eva Bubla (1985) é uma artista e ativista húngara. Atualmente é doutoranda na Universidade de Belas-Artes da Hungria, onde a sua investigação se foca no papel da arte enquanto um catalisador no contexto atual e desafios sociais e ecológicos. Anteriormente estudou Belas-Artes e Humanidades (Linguística e Estudos Culturais) na Universidade de Szeged, e Belas-Artes no Indonesian Institute of Arts Yogyakarta. Trabalha em site-specific, focando-se em questões sociais e ecológicas especificas de um determinado local e comunidade. Combina ferramentas de participação de públicos, educação não formal, metodologias DIY e DIWO, colaborações transectoriais e práticas criativas coletivas. Os seus projetos individuais e colaborativos têm sido apresentados na Ásia e na Europa, em museus, galerias, festivais e bienais tais como Galeri Nasional Indonesia (ID), Jogja National Museum (ID), 2B Gallery (HU), Budapest Project Gallery (HU), FKSE Studio Gallery (HU), HONF Galeri (ID), Taman Budaya (ID), SaRang Gallery (ID), Durbar Hall Kochi (IN), TIFA Working Studios (IN), KOGART House Budapest (HU), Balaton Museum (HU), Williams Art Cambridge (UK), PLACCC Festival (HU), Le Giornate del Respiro (IT), Toortuumik Festival (EE), Mipaliw Wetlands Land Art Festival (TW), Guandu Nature Art Festival (TW), Gram Art Project (IN), Transformaking Festival (ID), Inter-format Symposium (LT), OFF-Biennale Budapest 2021 (HU), The Wrong Biennale (CZ), Geumgang Nature Art Pre-Biennale (KR), Terracotta Biennale Yogyakarta (ID). Tem participado em vários programas de residencia ( na Chéquia, Estónia, Hungria, Índia, Indonésia, Itália, Lituânia e Taiwan). A sua metodologia de trabalho foi financiada nos últimos anos pela Fundação Ludwing, pela Fundação European Cultural e pela Compagnia di San Paolo, pela Embaixada da Hungria Jakarta, pelo Ministério da Cultura e da Educação da Indonésia e pelo Departamento da Cultura de Szeged. Recentemente foi escolhida como artista associada da IN SITU, uma plataforma europeia de criação artística no espaço público, no contexto do seu projeto de quatro anos (UN)COMMON SPACES, financiado pelo programa da Europa Criativa.

Apresentação por IRENE AGRIVINA

Desde 1990 HONF evoluiu de um centro de arte para um laboratório cultural e tecnológico aberto, com uma rede complexa de relações com instituições formais e informais de conhecimento, mas também com comunidades locais e globais. Agentes criativos, com diferentes formações – artistas, cientistas, ativistas, designers, hackers, artesões, etc. envolveram-se neste projeto e mostraram como é que a ciência e a tecnologia são usadas para responder a vários desafios locais e questões críticas. A investigação artística, de diferentes disciplinas, é transformada em trabalhos interativos e públicos ao utilizar métodos DIY e DIWO, que têm objetivos estéticos, educacionais e sociais. HONF também funciona como um laboratório cultural ligado a redes semelhantes, regionais e globais, que trabalham sob o seu próprio currículo denominado Education Focus Program.

Advogada de sistemas abertos, tecnologista, artista e educadora Irene Agrivina é licenciada em Visual Communication Design pelo Indonesia Institute of Art (ISI), Yogyakarta, e mestranda em Culture and Religion na Sanata Dharma University em Yogyakarta. É um dos membros fundadores e diretora do HONF, o laboratório de new media e tecnologia de Yogyakarta. Criado em 1998 como um espaço de expressão aberta, arte e tecnologias culturais na sequencia da “revolução” indonésia, HONF – House of Natural Fiber surgiu da agitação social e política contra o regime de Suharto, o seu nepotismo e corrupção governamental. Agrivina é responsável pelo Education Focus Programme (EFP) do HONF, que se foca na aplicação e utilização prática quotidiana de ações colaborativas, transdisciplinares e tecnologias que respondam a desafios sociais, culturais e ambientais. Como resposta às necessidades das sociedades em desenvolvimento e transição, o HONF e o EFP aplicam ações abertas, colaborativas e sustentáveis que de modo sistemático expandem ou convertem tecnologias acessíveis para serem usadas enquanto ferramentas e metodologias multifuncionais.

Participou em variados festivais tais como Re;Publica, Transmediale, Pixelache, Mal Au Pixel, New Museum Trienalle, APAP 5. Expôs e falou sobre o seu trabalho em galerias, museus e universidades espalhadas pelo mundo. Em 2011, numa colaboração com Waag Society, fundou o HONFablab, como o primeiro Fablab no Sudoeste Asiático, e em 2013 fundou o XXLab, um coletivo só com mulheres que se foca nas artes, cienência e tecnologia gratuita enquanto um programa comunitário subsidiário da HONF. Um dos seus projetos, SOYA C(O)U(L)TURE (2015) ganhou o prémio 2015 Prix Ars Electronica. Também foi escolhida pela Asialink, Australia como uma das Seis Mulheres Pioneiras do Sudoeste Asiático. FACTT 20/21: Festival Transdisciplinar & Transnacional de Arte e Ciência vai decorrer durante o ano de 2021 num formato online, chegando assim a todos os continentes através de diferentes eventos que vão ser anunciados. O FACTT é um projeto organizado e promovido pelo Arte Institute, e a sua conceção parte de uma parceria com a Cultivamos Cultura e Ectopia (Portugal). Para a sua edição de 20/21 contou com a colaboração curatorial do InArts Lab da Ionian University – Department of Audio and Visual Arts (Grécia), Arscisaloon do The Fields Institute e do Sensorium da York University (Canadá), da Escola de Artes Visuais (Estados Unidos da América), UNAM, Arte+Ciencia e Bioscénica (México) e a Central Academy of Fine Arts (China).

The Arte Institute and RHI Initiative, in partnership with Cultivamos Cultura, have the pleasure to present a “FACTT 20/21 – Improbable Times” panel discussion with Eva Bubla from Hungary and Irene Agrivina from Indonesia focusing on their own activities, their mutual collaboration and the international revelation of these forms of activism while working with local communities. This event taking place on the 28th of June, at 10 am Toronto / 3pm Lisbon / 4pm Hungary / 9pm Yogyakarta, was conceived by the independent FACTT curator Nina Czegledy.

Presentation by EVA BUBLA
The social and ecological challenges of recent times questioned the roles and responsibilities of artists and cultural practitioners. Several artists approached current issues by imagining new ways of living for a more sustainable form of future, attempting to trigger social transformation, a shift in values, changes in environmental issues, or a crucial system change. Is art truly capable of making a difference? The case studies presented will cover some of Eva Bubla’s solo and collaborative projects, artistic strategies and collective practices, and the potential of art as a catalyst. As an artist, activist and educator, Eva’s works articulate current social and ecological concerns and are strongly connected to the specific environment and community. At the boundaries of art and science, her projects aim to raise awareness on various sustainability challenges, in an attempt to catalyse a change in attitude or action. Eva is keen on working together with local communities and other sectors; as these forms of interactions define if an object, an installation, a performance, a workshop, a discussion or a festival is born.

Eva Bubla (1985) is a Hungarian artist and activist. Currently, she is enrolled in the Doctoral School of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, where her research focuses on the role of art as a catalyst in the context of the social and ecological challenges of our times. Previously she was studying Fine Arts and Humanities (Linguistics and Cultural Studies) at the University of Szeged, and Fine Arts at the Indonesian Institute of Arts Yogyakarta. She works site-specific, focusing on the social and ecological issues of the specific location and community. She combines tools such as public engagement, alternative education, DIY and DIWO methodology, cross-sectoral collaboration and collective creative practices. Her work process was granted in the last years by the Ludwig Foundation, the European Cultural Foundation and Compagnia di San Paolo, the Embassy of Hungary Jakarta, the Ministry of Culture and Education of the Republic of Indonesia, and the Department of Culture of the Szeged City Council. Recently, she has been chosen as an Associate artist of IN SITU, the European platform for artistic creation in public space, in the frame of the four-year project (UN)COMMON SPACES, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.

Presentation by IRENE AGRIVINA
Since 1999 HONF evolved from a media arts center to open culture and technology laboratory with complex network of relations to the formal and informal institutions of knowledge, but also local and global open communities. Creative practitioners of different backgrounds, including artists, scientist, activists, designers, hackers, makers,, etc. involved at HONF’s projects and demonstrate how science and technology are used to respond to various local challenges and critical issues. The scientific research from different disciplines is transformed into public interactive works using DIY (Do It Yourself) and DIWO (Do It With Others) methods, which have aesthetic as well as educational and social goals. HONF also functions as a cultural laboratory connected to similar networks both regionally and globally and working under their own curriculum called Education Focus Program.

Open systems advocate, technologist, artist and educator Irene Agrivina is graduate from Visual Communication Design program at the Indonesia Institute of Art (ISI), Yogyakarta, and continuing her study at Culture and Religion Magister Program at Sanata Dharma University in Yogyakarta. She is one of the founding members and current directors of HONF, the Yogyakarta based new media and technology laboratory. Created in 1998 as a place of open expression, art and cultural technologies in the wake of the Indonesian “revolution”, HONF aka the ‘House of Natural Fiber’ was born out of the social and political turmoil against the Suharto regime, its nepotism and governmental corruption. Agrivina runs HONF’s ‘Education Focus Programme’ (EFP) which focuses on the application and practical use in daily life of collaborative, cross-disciplinary and technological actions responding to social, cultural and environmental challenges. In response to the needs of societies in development and transition, HONF and EFP apply open, collaborative and sustainable actions that systematically expand or convert accessible technologies to be used as multifunctional tools and methodologies. She has participated in numerous festivals such as Re;Publica, Transmediale, Pixelache, Mal Au Pixel, New Museum Trienalle, APAP 5. She exhibited her work and gave her lectures at some respectable galleries, museums and universities around the world. At 2011 in collaboration with Waag Society she co-founded HONFablab, as the first Fablab in South East Asia, and at 2013 she founded XXLab an all female collective focusing in arts, science and free technology as a HONF’s spin-off communities, one of their project, SOYA C(O)U(L)TURE (2015) was crowned as the winner of 2015 Prix Ars Electronica awards, a prestigious European Commission-supported competition for cyberarts in Linz, Austria. She was also chosen by Asialink, Australia as one of The Six Women in Pioneer from South East Asia.

FACTT 20/21: Trans-disciplinary & Trans-national Festival of Art & Science is exhibited online during 2021 with different events to be announced taking place throughout the year across continents. FACTT is a project spearheaded and promoted by the Arte Institute in conception partnership with Cultivamos Cultura and Ectopia (Portugal), and, for its 20-21version, in curatorial collaboration with InArts Lab@ Ionian University – Department of Audio and Visual Arts (Greece), Artscisalon@The Fields Institute and Sensorium@York University (Canada), School of Visual Arts (USA), UNAM, Arte+Ciencia and Bioscénica (Mexico), and Central Academy of Fine Arts (China).
