Projecto Parietaria

PT// Foi já nos meus trintas que me apercebi que tinha sintomas de constipação sazonais. Foi o então meu vizinho que perante o estardalhaço dos meus espirros me referiu o óbvio: “a ver se és alérgica por exemplo a esta ervinha (cujo nome em grego não me recordo) aqui no muro ou às oliveiras…” Algum tempo depois fiz uma série de testes alérgicos mas nada acusou. Mudei de casa e mesmo perto do mar tudo se repetia. Foi então que notei a ervinha num muro em Corfu. Comecei a evitar sair em horas com elevado índice de pólen e a executar um ritual de mudança de roupa e banho assim que regressava a casa. Há três anos atrás em Maio na Cultivamos Cultura após dias de espirros, comichão nos olhos e nariz a correr tomei um anti-histaminico pela primeira vez. Milagre… Que alívio. E lá estava ela: a ervinha no muro em São Luís.

A ervinha no muro é uma planta tão vulgar e tão discreta na sua aparência que passa facilmente desapercebida ao olho. Da mesma família da urtiga, a espécie Parietaria, comummente conhecida como alfavaca-de-cobra ou simplesmente erva-das-paredes, apresenta propriedades medicinais mas para alguns ela provoca reações alérgicas. Cada vez que espirro (em tempo de pandemia um espirro pode ser uma declaração de guerra) lá está ela. A utilização frequente de máscara reduziu bastante os meus sintomas e assim de armadura apresento o meu projecto de investigação: criar uma relação de intimidade com o agente alergénico. O Projecto Parietaria pretende promover uma aproximação segura ao condutor de alergias para conhecer o seu corpo, explorar a sua estrutura, modificar a sua textura.

Dalila Honorato, Ph.D, é Professora Assistente Livre em Estética e Semiótica Visual, Universidade Ionian, Grécia, e colaboradora no Centro de Filosofia das Ciências, Univ. Lisboa, Portugal. Cofundadora do Interactive Arts Lab, dirige a conferência interdisciplinar “Taboo-Transgression-Transcendence in Art & Science” e, juntamente com Marta de Menezes, a conceitualizadora e desenvolvedora do projeto “FEMeeting: Women in Art, Science” e Tecnologia”. Project Parietaria

ENG// It was in my thirties that I realized that I had seasonal flu symptoms. It was then my neighbor who, in the face of my sneezing, told me the obvious. “Maybe you are allergic to the olive trees or to this herb here on the wall or…” Some time later I did a series of allergy tests but nothing was found. I moved to a new house closer to the sea but I kept sneezing. I noticed weeds growing on the wall in Corfu, the very same weeds my neighbor had pointed out. I started avoiding going out in hours with a high pollen index and performing a ritual of changing clothes and bathing as soon as I returned home. Three years ago in May at Cultivamos Cultura after days of sneezing, itchy eyes and running nose I took an antihistamine for the first time. Miracle… What a relief. And there it was: the weed on the wall in São Luís.

The so-called ‘herb on the wall’ is a plant so common and so discreet in appearance that it easily goes unnoticed by the eye. From the same family as the nettle, the Parietaria species (commonly known in Portugal as snake ivy or simply wall weed) has medicinal properties. But… for some it causes allergic reactions. Every time I sneeze (in a pandemic time a sneeze can be a declaration of war) there it is. The frequent use of a mask has greatly reduced my symptoms and thus I present my research project of armor: creating an intimate relationship with the allergenic agent. The Parietaria Project aims to promote a safe approach to the driver of allergies to get to know its body, explore its structure, modify its texture.

Dalila Honorato, Ph.D, is Tenured Assistant Professor in Aesthetics and Visual Semiotics, Ionian University, Greece, and collaborator at the Center of Philosophy of Sciences, Univ. Lisbon, Portugal. Cofounder of the Interactive Arts Lab, she is the head of the interdisciplinary conference “Taboo-Transgression-Transcendence in Art & Science”, and, together with Marta de Menezes, the conceptualizer and developer of the project “FEMeeting: Women in Art, Science and Technology”.
