ENG// The sensory garden at Cultivamos Cultura is the outcome of a three month residency during which the artist transitioned the area – containing and repurposing a previous artist’s work (a compost pile) – into a newly grown green space, intended as an interactive haven, offering myriad sensorial stimuli.
The work explores themes of intimacy and separateness; risk and safety; limitation and boundlessness; specifically in the context of plant to non-plant relationship. The artist is interested in the way spaces, particularly those co-created with plants, elicit different responses in those relating with them, and in what ways collaborations with nature can offer a scene for such exchange.
Cultivamos Cultura Sensory Garden is a combination of pre-existing trees on site, plants grown especially from seed and propagation by the artist, and locally purchased plants, including native and non-native species. It is designed for beauty, tactility, pleasure and exploration, as well as seasonal and long term durability in the local climate. The cocoon, which visitors can enter, has had a series of different climbing plants ascend it, and in the long term is intended to be fully enveloped by jasmine (Jasminum officinale) – which will be both evergreen and highly fragrant when in flower – making it an immersive sanctum for all the senses.
Alongside the making of the garden, the artist explored the potential for ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) to be triggered by human-plant interaction. The short film “Can I touch you?”, created towards the end of the residency once the garden was fully planted and already in flower, is a taster of how plants can be touched in such ways as elicits ASMR in the artist. Many of the plants in the garden were chosen specifically for their visual or tactile appeal for this purpose.

O jardim sensorial da Cultivamos Cultura é o resultado de uma residência de três meses durante a qual o artista transformou a área — contendo e reutilizando o trabalho de um artista anterior (uma pilha de composto) — num espaço verde recém-cultivado, concebido como um refúgio interativo, oferecendo inúmeros estímulos sensoriais.
O trabalho explora temas como intimidade e separação; risco e segurança; limitação e infinitude; especificamente no contexto da relação entre plantas e não plantas. O artista está interessado na forma como os espaços, particularmente aqueles co-criados com plantas, provocam respostas diferentes naqueles que se relacionam com eles, e de que forma as colaborações com a natureza podem oferecer um cenário para tal troca.
O Jardim Sensorial Cultivamos Cultura é uma combinação de árvores pré-existentes no local, plantas cultivadas especialmente a partir de sementes e propagação pelo artista, e plantas compradas localmente, incluindo espécies nativas e não nativas. Foi concebido para proporcionar beleza, tactilidade, prazer e exploração, bem como durabilidade sazonal e a longo prazo no clima local. O casulo, no qual os visitantes podem entrar, tem uma série de diferentes plantas trepadeiras a subir por ele e, a longo prazo, pretende-se que seja totalmente envolvido por jasmim (Jasminum officinale) — que será perene e altamente perfumado quando em flor — tornando-o um santuário imersivo para todos os sentidos.
Paralelamente à criação do jardim, o artista explorou o potencial da ASMR (resposta sensorial meridiana autónoma) ser desencadeada pela interação entre humanos e plantas. O curta-metragem «Can I touch you?», criado no final da residência, quando o jardim já estava totalmente plantado e em flor, é uma amostra de como as plantas podem ser tocadas de forma a provocar ASMR no artista. Muitas das plantas do jardim foram escolhidas especificamente pelo seu apelo visual ou tátil para este fim.

About the Artist
ENG// Crystal Mallon Kershaw, born 1982 Manchester, UK, is an arts practitioner living in SW Alentejo, Portugal, since 2017. She holds a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (Camberwell College of Arts, UAL) and a BA English Literature (Kings College London) and is a satellite member of Ateneu do Catorze, an artist collective in São Luis, Odemira.
While living in different natural environments, her site-responsive work is led by the local landscape, frequently using seasonal materials of botanical origin, with outcomes – often sculpture or installation – mainly temporal and experiential in essence. Since renovating her own land in Portugal, Crystal’s work is increasingly shifting to the use of live and growing forms using plants, exploring the interplay between cultivated and wild spaces.

Vivendo em diferentes ambientes naturais, o seu trabalho é guiado pela paisagem local, utilizando frequentemente materiais sazonais de origem botânica, com resultados – frequentemente esculturas ou instalações – essencialmente temporais e experienciais. Desde que renovou o seu próprio terreno em Portugal, o trabalho de Crystal está a mudar cada vez mais para o uso de formas vivas e crescentes usando plantas, explorando a interação entre espaços cultivados e selvagens.
