ENG// In her artistic practice, Ana Baleia works essentially with textile waste, seeking to rescue not only the material, but also that which is immaterial. Starting from this idea and relating it to her interest in religious records and reliquaries, throughout the ‘Credo’ artistic residency at Cultivamos Cultura she has developed works that include textile pieces and other “leftovers”, creating evocative compositions that speak of people, places and times. ‘The Barn’ uses textile objects that belonged to the daily life of Cultivamos Cultura’s old farm and other elements collected from this place during the residency. A diptych that symbolically describes a narrative about the space.
PT// Na sua prática artística, Ana Baleia trabalha essencialmente com desperdício têxtil , procurando resgatar não só o material, mas também aquilo que é imaterial. Partindo desta ideia e relacionando-a com o seu interesse pelos registos religiosos e relicários, desenvolveu ao longo da residência artística ‘Credo’, na Cultivamos Cultura, trabalhos que incluem peças têxteis e outros “restos”, criando composições evocativas, que falam de pessoas, lugares e tempos. Em ‘The Barn’ são usados objetos têxteis que pertenciam ao quotidiano da antiga quinta da cultivamos cultura e outros elementos recolhidos neste lugar durante a residência. Díptico que descreve de maneira simbólica uma narrativa acerca do espaço.

About the Artist
ENG// Ana Baleia (Cascais, 1979) lives and works in São Luís, Odemira. With fashion design as her background, she currently develops her work as a visual artist, costume designer and designer, with an artistic practice intrinsically linked to her media of choice: Textile – transversal to all her projects, with a special focus on the use of waste and used clothing.
She has participated in group exhibitions and had her first solo show in 2022 at the Plato gallery in Évora. She collaborates as a costume designer with various theater companies, directors and choreographers. She is co-founder of the Ateneu do Catorze Cultural and Artistic Association in São Luís, where she has her studio. In 2024 she was one of the artists supported by the European Union’s Culture Moves Europe program, carrying out an artistic residency at Lottozero’s textile laboratories in Prato, Italy. Also in 2024, she was in residence at Cultivamos Cultura with her project “Credo”.
PT// Ana Baleia (Cascais, 1979) vive e trabalha em São Luís, Odemira. Tendo o design de moda como background, atualmente desenvolve o seu trabalho como artista visual, figurinista e designer, com uma prática artística intrinsecamente ligada ao seu media de eleição: o Têxtil – transversal a todos os seus projetos, com especial foco no uso do desperdício e da roupa usada. Tem participado em exposições coletivas e teve a sua primeira exposição individual em 2022, na galeria Plato, em Évora. Colabora como figurinista com várias companhias de teatro, encenadores e coreógrafos. É cofundadora da Associação Cultural e Artística Ateneu do Catorze, em São Luís, onde tem o seu atelier. Em 2024 foi uma das artistas apoiadas pelo programa Culture Moves Europe, da União Europeia, realizando uma residência artística nos laboratórios têxteis da Lottozero, em Prato, Itália. Também em 2024, esteve em residência na Cultivamos Cultura com o seu projeto “Credo”.
