PT// Durante duas semanas, Felipe Shibuya e Tiago Torres-Campos mergulharam nas paisagens alentejanas para estudar as plantações de sobreiros, conhecidas como montados. O seu projecto visa compreender a ligação entre os sobreiros e a desertificação em Portugal, tanto a nível ecológico como social. Numa primeira fase, na Cultivamos Cultura, exploraram a criação de biomateriais a partir de elementos de montado como solo oxidado e cortiça. O projeto continuará a desenvolver-se em Providence, nos Estados Unidos, onde os artistas estão baseados.
EN// For two weeks, Felipe Shibuya and Tiago Torres-Campos immersed themselves in the Alentejo landscapes to study the cork oak plantations, known as montados. Their project aims to understand the connection between cork oaks and desertification in Portugal on both ecological and social levels. In the first phase, at Cultivamos Cultura, they explored creating biomaterials from montado elements like oxidized soil and cork. The project will continue to develop in Providence, United States, where the artists are based.
PT// Felipe Shibuya é um ecologista e artista brasileiro que decidiu aventurar-se por todo o mundo. A sua viagem começou quando concluiu o seu doutoramento em Ecologia e Conservação da Natureza na Universidade Federal do Paraná. Decidiu então explorar os aspectos visuais que tinha incluído na sua pesquisa, para além da perspectiva puramente científica. Tem também um Mestrado em Arte Estúdio da Universidade Estadual de Nova Iorque em Buffalo, onde trabalhou com bactérias pigmenta das, com a intenção de compreender como as cores que sintetizam podem ser sinais de comunicação para nós, humanos. Ser um cientista-artista permite a Felipe explorar diferentes formas de vida, desde bactérias a árvores, usando diferentes métodos, desde cultura microbiológica a vídeos. Atualmente, Felipe é Hyundai Biological Programs Fellow da Edna W. Lawrence Nature Lab, na Rhode lsland School of Design.
Tiago Torres-Campos é arquiteto paisagista e professor associado na Rhode Island School of Design (EUA). Tem um doutoramento em Arquitetura pelo Design (Edimburgo) e um mestrado em Arquitetura Paisagista (Lisboa). Antes de integrar na RISD, deu aulas no Edinburgh College of Art, onde integrou o Mestrado Europeu em Arquitetura Paisagista (EMiLA).
Tiago tem apresentado várias propostas premiadas. Prémios de design recentes incluem LA+ Journal – Iconoclast, City Vision (Rio de Janeiro e Roma), Vision 42 (NYC), e Future Architecture Platform – com comissões de design e curadoria para MAXXI (Roma), MAO (Ljubljana), LX Triennale (Lisboa), e CANActions (Kiev).
Tiago co-editou o livro Postcards from the Anthropocene: Unsettling the Geopolitics of Representation (2022, DPR-Barcelona).
ENG// Felipe Shibuya is a Brazilian ecologist and artist who decided to adventure around the world. His Journey began when he completed his Ph.D. in Ecology and Nature Conservation at the Federal University of Paraná. He then decided to explore the visual aspects he had included in his research, beyond the purely scientific perspective. He also holds an M.fA. in Studio Art from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he worked with pigmented bacteria, with the intention of understanding how the colors they synthesize could be communication signals for us humans. Being a scientist- artist enables Felipe to explore different forms of life, from bacteria to trees, using different methods, from microbiological culture to vídeos. Currently, Felipe is the Hyundai Biological Programs Fellow at Edna W Lawrence Nature Lab, at Rhode /stand School of Design.
Tiago Torres-Campos is a Portuguese landscape architect and Associate Professor at Rhode Island School of Design (USA). He holds a PhD in Architecture by Design (Edinburgh) and a MSc in Landscape Architecture (Lisbon). Before joining RISD, he taught at Edinburgh College of Art, where he integrated the European Masters in Landscape Architecture (EMiLA).
Tiago has delivered several award-winning proposals. Recent design awards include LA+ Journal – Iconoclast, City Vision (Rio de Janeiro and Rome), Vision 42 (NYC), and Future Architecture Platform—with design and curatorial commissions for MAXXI (Rome), MAO (Ljubljana), LX Triennale (Lisbon), and CANActions (Kiev).
