A arte dos registos religiosos é uma bela e velha tradição portuguesa de origem conventual que desde sempre captou a minha atenção. Os registos são delicadas peças decorativas onde estão emoldurados os santinhos, ou pagelinhas (pequena página com figuras religiosas), trabalhadas depois com minúcia e criatividade, normalmente por mulheres, usando tecidos e passamanarias, inspiradas por sentimentos de fé e devoção. Na minha prática artística tenho trabalhado com desperdícios têxteis, recolho também objetos que me tocam e que guardo até hoje, coisas que pertencem à minha infância e adolescência. Há objetos que conseguem ser lugares – lugares de imensa beleza, amor, alegria. São coisas visíveis que nos transportam até às invisíveis, coisas onde pousamos os olhos e vivemos memórias, enchendo o coração e o espírito numa experiência quase mística, pessoal e intransmissível, semelhante às devoções religiosas.
Durante esta residência pretendo praticar intensa e devotamente a minha fé na total liberdade de credo e liberdade de expressão, praticando o culto aos meus santinhos – coisas banais que encontro na rua, páginas de um caderno da primária, bonecas de plástico, figuras pop num calendário. Vou usar a minha coleção de restos – restos têxteis mas também brinquedos, livros escolares, cartas, postais, cosendo e compondo numa lógica de colagem ou de agregação de vários retalhos que juntos criam uma narrativa – trabalhando as memórias, as saudades, as crenças e devoções, o que me salva, o que me inspira, fascina, o belo e o simbólico.

The art of religious records is a beautiful and old Portuguese tradition of convent origins that has always captured my attention. The records are delicate decorative pieces in which the saints, or little pages (small page with religious figures) are framed, then worked with detail and creativity, normally by women, using fabrics and trimmings, inspired by feelings of faith and devotion. In my artistic practice I have worked with textile waste, I also collect objects that touch me and that I keep to this day, things that belong to my childhood and adolescence. There are objects that can be places – places of immense beauty, love, joy. They are visible things that transport us to invisible ones, things where we rest our eyes and experience memories, filling our hearts and spirits in an almost mystical, personal and non-transferable experience, similar to religious devotions.
During this residency I intend to intensely and devoutly practice my faith in total freedom of belief and freedom of expression, worshiping my saints – banal things I find on the street, pages from a primary school notebook, plastic dolls, pop figures on a calendar . I will use my collection of scraps – textile scraps but also toys, school books, letters, postcards, sewing and composing in a logic of collage or aggregation of various scraps that together create a narrative – working on memories, longings, beliefs and devotions, what saves me, what inspires me, fascinates me, the beautiful and the symbolic.

Ana Baleia vive e trabalha em São Luís, Odemira.
Licenciou-se em design de moda na faculdade de Arquitetura de Lisboa e no mesmo ano foi uma das vencedoras do concurso Jovens Criadores, na categoria de Moda, representando Portugal na Bienal de Atenas.
Desenvolve o seu trabalho como designer, figurinista e artista visual, sempre com os têxteis como matéria-prima.
Há vários anos que desenvolve projetos dedicados ao upcycling e a sua atividade artística centra-se no uso dos desperdícios e roupa descartada, procurando também agir localmente e contribuir para uma economia circular na área dos têxteis. É cofundadora da Associação Cultural e Artística Ateneu do Catorze, em são Luís, onde tem o seu atelier, partilhando o espaço com outros artistas. Em 2022 teve a primeira exposição individual e tem participado também em exposições coletivas. É, em 2024, uma das artistas apoiadas pelo programa Culture Moves Europe, da União Europeia.

Ana Baleia in based in São Luís, Odemira.
She graduated in fashion design at the Faculty of Architecture in Lisbon and in the same year was one of the winners of the Young Creators competition, in the Fashion category, representing Portugal at the Athens Biennale. Ana Baleia develops her work as a designer, costume designer and visual artist, always using textiles as raw material. She has been developing projects dedicated to upcycling for several years and her artistic activity focuses on the use of waste and discarded clothing, also seeking to act locally and contribute to a circular economy in the area of textiles. She is a co-founder of the Cultural and Artistic Association Ateneu do Catorze, in São Luís, where she has her studio, sharing the space with other artists. In 2022 she had her first solo exhibition and has also participated in group exhibitions. In 2024, she is one of the artists supported by the European Union’s Culture Moves Europe program.
