Bio
Ingrid Hess é professora associada de design gráfico no Departamento de Arte e Design da Universidade de Massachusetts Lowell. É artista de corte de papel e autora/ilustradora de livros infantis. Grande parte dos estudos de Hess concentram-se no uso da arte e do design para capacitar as crianças a serem bons administradores do meio ambiente. A simplicidade no trabalho de Hess é fortemente influenciada pela sua herança Amish/Menonita; as cores e padrões brilhantes são inspirados na arte da Costa Rica (a sua casa de infância durante quatro anos). As suas duas paixões, design e ilustração, funcionam bem juntas e a ajudam a contar histórias através das imagens.
Hess é também uma talentosa escritora e ilustradora de livros infantis. Alguns dos seus títulos são Sleep in Peace, Doodling Dragons, Knitting Knits, Whistling Whales, Mister Magnificent’s Magical Merrimack Adventure e How Your Brain Learns To Read! . Todos ganharam prémios nacionais. Hess entende como é fundamental que todos os tipos de crianças sejam representados nos livros que lêem. Historicamente, os livros infantis não têm feito um bom trabalho ao retratar a diversidade. Este problema está lentamente a começar a mudar e Hess faz parte dessa mudança. Ela também trabalha com museus e parques nacionais, tanto a nível nacional como internacional, para criar exposições educativas para crianças.

While I’m in Portugal I will be working on a series of images that are inspired both by the quote, “All water is holy water.” by American playwright Rajiv Joseph and by one of Portugal’s cultural symbols: the sardine.
Bio
Ingrid Hess is an associate professor of graphic design in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She is also a cut-paper artist and a children’s book author/illustrator. Much of Hess’s scholarship focuses on using art and design to empower children to be good stewards of the environment. The simplicity in Hess’s work is heavily influenced by her Amish/Mennonite heritage; the bright colors and patterns are inspired by art from Costa Rica (her childhood home for four years). Her dual passions of design and illustration work well together and help her tell stories through pictures.
Hess is an accomplished children’s book writer and illustrator. Her titles Sleep in Peace, Doodling Dragons, Knitting Knits, Whistling Whales, Mister Magnificent’s Magical Merrimack Adventure, and How Your Brain Learns To Read! have all won national awards. Hess understands how critical it is that all types of children are represented in the books they read. Historically, children’s books have not done a good job depicting diversity. This problem is slowly beginning to change. Hess is part of this change. She also works with museums and national parks, both nationally and internationally to create educational exhibitions for children.
