PT// A Kinnara Fund’s exposição “Living With Cork” [Viver com Cortiça] apresenta um ambiente de cortiça cativante composto por cápsulas habilmente esculpidas que evocam os sentidos, os aromas e os visuais do ecossistema da cortiça. Esta instalação única de bio-arte é o trabalho criativo de Marta de Menezes, uma artista portuguesa que passou a sua infância na região do Alentejo.
A exposição centra-se no significado da tradição da cortiça, que se baseia na extração sustentável do sobreiro. Neste processo, a cortiça é cuidadosamente descascada das árvores, aproximadamente de nove em nove anos. Após cada descortiçamento, a casca é deixada a secar naturalmente na floresta antes de ser transportada para uma fábrica onde é submetida a um processo de cozedura e aplanamento. Este método tradicional, transmitido de geração em geração, é utilizado há milhares de anos.
Para além disso, “Living With Cork” apresenta instalações cativantes do designer americano Robert Marinelli, que utilizam cortiça nas suas criações. Estes designs inovadores de mobiliário e objetos estão perfeitamente integrados no ambiente de cortiça pensado por Marta de Menezes. A colaboração entre Robert e Marta simboliza a relação entre estas criações e a sua origem, realçando a sua interdependência.
Em suma, a exposição “Living With Cork” apresenta uma experiência imersiva que não só celebra as qualidades notáveis da cortiça, como também mostra a sinergia criativa entre Marta de Menezes e Robert Marinelli através das suas cativantes obras de arte.

EN// The Kinnara Fund’s exhibition titled “Living With Cork” showcases a captivating cork environment composed of skilfully sculpted capsules that evoke the senses, scents, and visuals of the cork ecosystem. This unique bio-art installation is the creative work of Marta de Menezes, a Portuguese artist who spent her childhood in the Alentejo region.
The exhibition focuses on the significance of the cork tradition, which relies on the sustainable harvesting of cork oak trees. In this process, the cork bark is carefully peeled from the trees, approximately every nine years. After each harvest, the bark is left to dry naturally in the forest before being transported to a factory where it undergoes boiling and flattening. This traditional method passed down through generations, has been used for thousands of years.
Additionally, “Living With Cork” features captivating installations by American designer Robert Marinelli, who utilizes harvested cork in his creations. These innovative furniture and object designs are seamlessly integrated within Marta de Menezes’ cork environment. The collaboration between Robert and Marta symbolizes the relationship between creation and its source, emphasizing their interdependency.

PT// Marta de Menezes (1975) é uma artista portuguesa, licenciada em Belas Artes pela Universidade de Lisboa e com um Mestrado pela Universidade de Oxford. De Menezes é a diretora de duas associações culturais em Portugal, a Cultivamos Cultura e a Ectopia. Marta de Menezes trabalha na intersecção entre a arte e a biologia desde o final dos anos 90, explorando as oportunidades conceptuais e estéticas oferecidas pelas ciências biológicas para a representação visual nas artes. O seu trabalho tem sido exposto em grandes salas em todos os continentes, apresentado na maioria das antologias dedicadas à bioarte, discutido em dissertações de doutoramento e considerado um exemplo de pesquisa nas artes visuais. Além do seu trabalho enquanto artista, De Menezes foi curadora de grandes exposições internacionais como a European Capital of Culture (Portugal), Kontejner Festival (Zagreb), Verbeke Fundation(Bélgica) e FACTT–Transnational and Transdiciplinary Festival of Art and Science.
Robert Marinelli é um designer e artista sediado em Nova Iorque, reconhecido por criar mobiliário, objetos e espaços interiores distintos. O seu trabalho é simultaneamente escultural e funcional, dissolvendo as fronteiras entre as disciplinas aparentemente distintas da arte, do design de interiores e da arquitetura. As suas criações são inspiradas pela natureza, mas ultrapassam os limites do design ao explorar novos materiais, tecnologias e colaborações com artesãos. Os seus interesses interdisciplinares levaram-no a estudar literatura em Boston, história da arte e da arquitetura em Londres e Paris, e design de interiores em Nova Iorque. Viveu em Tóquio, Istambul e Berlim, onde trabalhou com importantes empresas de arquitetura em projetos de design especializado, procurando sempre a colaboração de artesãos locais para o desenvolvimento do seu trabalho. Robert foi um dos primeiros visionários a abrir uma galeria colaborativa no Meatpacking District de Manhattan, onde expôs a sua coleção de mobiliário e objetos juntamente com uma seleção altamente selecionada de arte, iluminação e têxteis. Os seus designs têm sido apresentados em meios de comunicação social de todo o mundo, incluindo Architectural Digest, The Wall Street Journal, Wallpaper, Departures, Luxe Magazine, The World of Interiors e 1st dibs Introspective.

De Menezes is director of two cultural institutions in Portugal, Cultivamos Cultura and Ectopia. Marta de Menezes has worked in the intersection of art and biology since the late 90s, exploring the conceptual and aesthetic opportunities offered by biological sciences for visual representation in the arts. Her work has been widely exhibited in major venues in all continents, presented in most anthologies devoted to bioart, discussed in doctoral dissertations, and considered an example of research in the visual arts. Besides her work as artist, de Menezes curated major international exhibitions including for European Capital of Culture(Portugal), Kontejner Festival (Zagreb), Verbeke Foundation (Belgium) and FACTT–Transnational and Transdisciplinary Festival of Art and Science.
Robert Marinelli is a New York based designer and artist recognized for creating distinctive furnishings, objects, and interior spaces. His work is both sculptural and functional, dissolving the boundaries between seemingly distinct disciplines of art, interior design, and architecture. His creations are inspired by nature yet push the limits of design by exploring new materials, technologies, and collaborations with artisans. His cross-disciplinary interests led him to study literature in Boston, art and architectural history in London and Paris, and Interior Design in New York. He lived in Tokyo, Istanbul, and Berlin where he worked with prominent architectural firms on specialized design projects, always seeking the collaboration of local artisans for the development of his work. Robert is one of the first visionaries to open a collaborative gallery in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, he exhibited his collection of furnishings and objects alongside a highly curated selection of art, lighting, and textiles.
