Na Cultivamos Cultura, Mia Bailey vai desenvolver o elemento de texto para Failure: a Manifesto: um projecto de videoarte e livro de artistas que aborda o processo artístico e a sua relevância social. Os artistas são especialistas no fracasso: para criar uma boa obra, temos de falhar muitas vezes. Os artistas muitas vezes falham em satisfazer as suas próprias expectativas, para não mencionar o fracasso em ganhar a vida, ou o fracasso em encontrar um vasto público para a sua arte. O projecto de vídeo e o livro de artista exploram a necessidade do fracasso no processo de criação, experimentação e invenção da arte. Questionam também sobre o que se designa por “fracasso” numa sociedade dominada por uma ideologia capitalista tardia, e como é que o fracasso em ser bem sucedido ou em se conformar poderia ser benéfico para todos nós, como artistas e pessoas.

BIO

Mia Bailey é uma artista e escritora. É licenciada pela SOAS da Universidade de Londres, licenciada em Pintura pela State Academy of Fine Arts de Karlsruhe, Alemanha, e mestre pela Iowa Writer’s Workshop, onde foi uma Maytag Fellow. A sua escrita tem sido antologizada, e as suas criações visuais tem sido expostas na Alemanha, Suécia, Austrália e Coreia. O tema central do seu trabalho é a possibilidade de visão, física e metafórica.

At Cultivamos Cultura, Mia Bailey will develop the text element for Failure: a Manifesto : a video art and artists’ book project that deals with the artistic process and its social relevance. Artists are experts in failure: to create one good work, we have to fail many times over. Artists often fail to meet their own expectations, not to mention failing at earning a living, or failing to find a broad audience for their art. The video project and artists’ book explore how necessary failure is to the process of art-making, experimentation, and invention. It also asks questions about what is termed “failure” in a society dominated by a late capitalist ideology, and how the failure to succeed or to conform could work to our benefit as artists and people.

BIO

Mia Bailey is an artist and writer. She received a B.A. from SOAS at the University of London, a graduate degree in painting from the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, Germany, and an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she was a Maytag Fellow. Her writing has been anthologized, and her visual art has been exhibited in Germany, Switzerland, Australia, and Korea. The central theme of her written and visual work is the possibility of sight, both physical and metaphorical.
