Nesta residência Paulo Bernardino Bastos desenvolveu o seu projeto “Espaço Alternativo (em equilíbrio)”.

Na consciência que o artista vai tecendo acerca do mundo, através das suas obras propostas, vemos, inevitavelmente, aparecer o culto do indivíduo – o seu espaço. Procura-se, através das marcas da sua personalidade atribuir marcas de pessoalidade – que se evidenciam a nível conceptual – levando a obra a percorrer formas de representar/traduzir o espaço com uma credibilidade e coerência (em termos de perceção), que obrigam o observador a recolocar-se, de forma alternativa, perante os materiais, os códigos a sua inerente presença física. O artista/indivíduo acolhe o conhecimento que tem do mundo e revela-o na sua atitude em equilíbrio, e coloca-se no centro da obra que se vê confrontado, essencialmente, numa dicotomia entre passado (existência e função) e presente (recombinação), obrigando os materiais e o espaço, através da composição, a evidenciar na sua constituição uma transformação metafórica, convertendo o espaço da representação (teatralização) em espaço de acontecimento (realidade tangível).

In this residency Paulo Bernardino Bastos developed his project “Espaço Alternativo (em equilíbrio)”.

In the awareness that the artist is weaving about the world, through the proposed works, we see, inevitably, the individual’s cult – his space – appear. It seeks, through the marks of its personality and personal marks – which are evident at the conceptual level – taking a work to go through ways of representing / translating the space with a credibility and coherence (in terms of perception), which compel the observer to return, alternatively, to the materials, the codes to their inherent physical presence. The artist / individual welcomes the knowledge he has of the world and reveals it in an attitude in balance, and places himself at the center of the work, which is essentially confronted in a dichotomy between past (existence and function) and present (recombination), forcing materials and space, through composition, showing in its constitution a metaphorical transformation, converting the space of representation (theatricalization) into space of event (tangible reality).

BIO | Paulo Bernardino Bastos é Doutor (PhD) em Estudos de Arte e Professor do programa de pós-graduação em Criação Artística Contemporânea na Universidade de Aveiro, no Departamento de Comunicação e Arte. Artista plástico, que desenvolveu a sua formação inicial na Escola Superior de Belas-Artes do Porto, tendo complementado a sua formação com um Mestrado em Artes, – Royal College of Art, London, U.K. Enquanto Artista começa por utilizar técnicas mais tradicionais das disciplinas do desenho e da escultura, que o levaram a produzir uma obra centrada no corpo numa perspetiva menos física e mais etérea. Posteriormente apercebe-se da potencialidade das relações físicas da obra com o espectador no espaço. Atualmente encontra-se direcionado para os meios de produção tecnológicos, questionando o espaço da ação do observador através da interação. Procurando articular o seu campo de pesquisa entre a teoria e a prática, desenvolve o seu universo de investigação olhando para as imagens produzidas através das várias mediações tecnológicas.

Paulo Bernardino Bastos holds a PhD in Art Studies and is a post-graduate professor in Contemporary Artistic Creation at the University of Aveiro, Department of Communication and Art. Paulo Bernardino Bastos is a plastic artist, who developed his initial training at the School of Fine Arts of Porto, having complemented it with a Master of Arts, – Royal College of Art, London, U.K. As an Artist he begun by using more traditional techniques from the disciplines of drawing and sculpture, which led him to produce a work centered on the body in a less physical and more ethereal perspective. Later he realized the potential of the physical relations of the work with the viewer in space. Currently he is interested in the technological means of production, questioning the space of action of the observer through interaction. Trying to articulate his field of research between theory and practice, he develops his research universe looking at the images produced through the various technological mediations.
