Acquired Immunity | Ars Eletronica 2020 | September 9th – 13th

Artists: Adam Zaretsky; Alan Tod; Amy Youngs; António Caramelo; Carla Rebelo; Carolyn Angleton; Dalila Honorato; Hege Tapio; Isabel Burr Raty; Karolina Żyniewicz; Kathy High; Ken Rinaldo; Kira O’Reilly; Lena Lee; Louise Mackenzie; Maria Manuela Lopes; Mark Lipton; Marta de Menezes; Matilde Real; Mónica Garcia; Paulo Bernardino Bastos; Pavel Tavares; Robertina Šebjanič.

Cultivamos Cultura presents Acquired Immunity, an exhibition of experimental artwork brought to you by the curator Marta de Menezes. It is a creative response based on the production of antibodies never seen in nature before. Taking place in our old farm, in the south of Portugal, but also a digital garden created for Ars Electronica 2020.

We have also created a virtual space where the exhibition lives with all the works created for our barn and the addition of specific works for the Hub. The digitisation and 3D modelling of all the works that exist in our physical and digital space would not have been possible without once again the extreme generosity and commitment of all our team and collaborators. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts Pavel Tavares, Diana Aires, Claudia Figueiredo, Dalila Honorato, Adam Zaretsky, Luis Graça and especially too Nuno Sousa.

Ars Electronica is one of the biggest festivals in the world that dedicates itself to the intersection between art and technology. This year, due to coronavirus crisis, presented itself in a new format that combines 120 locations spread all over the world. In this context, the local and the global will merge in São Luís, in a space dedicated to the interwoven exchanges of human and non-human.

Also part of the program:

– guided tours of the surrounding natural park landscape and culture of Sao Luis (Alentejo, Portugal)

– micro-documentaries on the work developed by former residents exploring the possibilities of laboratory and fieldwork in art and biology.

Cultivamos Cultura’s Garden is a space where the local and the global merge, that we see as a live organism. Like all organisms, it has different levels of organization at distinct scales: cells, tissues, organs, systems. At its core, a community of artists/researchers/makers, our residents, keep Cultivamos Cultura alive. At the next level, the interwoven exchanges with the local community of human and non-human members in São Luis (Alentejo, Portugal) within the largest natural park of the country. And beyond, the connections get strengthened by links that reach the whole world.

Program Part 1 – Acquired Immunity Exhibition

Acquired immunity displays artworks arising from our residencies and invited artists. We bring together artworks that were created as a response to challenges from the local environment: natural, social, and other artists. A response that we compare to the way the immune system responds to new challenges. We also present short glimpses of those local environments around São Luís, that are part of the Cultivamos Cultura experience.
