PT// Alter/ Altar é um projeto que promove a alfabetização e o interesse na proliferação e onipresença dos disruptores endócrinos no mundo ao nosso redor. Os disruptores endócrinos são compostos que mimetizam hormonas do corpo humano e podem promover os mesmos efeitos. Altar está mais interessada em Phalates (presente em sabonetes, velas, etc), Atrazine (um herbicida proibido pela UE) e BPAs (encontrados em recibos e plásticos), dois dos compostos mais comuns que imitam o estrogénio encontrados em produtos de uso diário. Altar especula se podemos melhorar as propriedades já desregulas do sistema endócrino de algumas plantas de forma a serem utilizadas em produtos farmacêuticos não regulados baseados em hormonas e biotecnologia.

ENG// Alter/Altar is designed to promote literacy and interest in the proliferation and ubiquity of endocrine disruptors in the world around us. Endocrine Disruptors are compounds that mimic hormones in the human body and can promote the same effects. Altar is most interested in Phalates (common in soaps, candles, etc), Atrazine (a now EU-banned herbicide) and BPAs (found in receipts and plastics), two of the most common estrogen-mimicking compounds found in everyday products. Altar speculates on whether we can enhance the already endocrine-disrupting properties of some plants for use in un-regulated hormone-based pharmaceuticals and biotech.

BIO

Byron Rich é artista, professor e palestrante, nascido em Calgary, Alberta, no Canadá. O seu trabalho explora de forma especulativa as áreas do design, biologia e mídia tática, e tem sido exposto e discutido internacionalmente. É formado em New-Media, da Universidade de Calgary e em Emerging Practices, da Universidade de Buffalo.  Em 2016 foi o segundo classificado do prémio BioArt & Design Award, e recebeu uma menção honrosa em 2017 no Prix Ars Electronica. Atualmente leciona Electronic Art & Intermedia na Allegheny College em Meadville, na Pennsylvania.

Byron Rich is an artist, professor and lecturer born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His work exploring speculative design, biology futures and tactical media has been widely shown and spoken about internationally. He pursued a degree in New-Media at The University of Calgary before finding himself in Buffalo, New York where he obtained an MFA in Emerging Practices at The University at Buffalo. He was the runner up for the 2016 BioArt & Design Award, and the recipient of an Honorary Mention at the 2017 Prix Ars Electronica. He now teaches Electronic Art & Intermedia at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
