Having just completed a long term project on industrial horticulture and its digital infrastructures, I dedicate this month in residency at Cultivamos Cultura to minor gestures – explorations of small, trivial actions to reflect upon and distort my artistic-research practice. Two years ago I titled the project I pitched for the European Digital Deal residency “The Archives of In-Operables”. The hope was to work with greenhouse datasets tracking everything from people to plants, water, and indoor climate, and to brush the datasets against the grain; to find what disrupts the seamlessness of digitization. Amidst the steepness of the hill that was negotiating access to spaces of agribusniess, and the daunting scale of issues adjacent to it, I lost sight of an important question: what does in-operability actually look like and for whom? Is in-operability the event horizon of interdisciplinary art beyond which nothing can be seen (supported, funded, exhibited)? The small gestures I hope to engage with will be exercises of this question, and the material results witnesses to the process.
Špela Petrič is a Slovenian hybrid media artist with a background in the natural sciences. Her artistic research and practice combines (bio)media and performativity to enact strange relations between bodies that question the underpinnings of our (bio)technological societies. Recently she has been looking closely at automation of care in agriculture and medicine. Petrič has received several awards, such as the White Aphroid for outstanding artistic achievement (Slovenia), the Bioart and Design Award (Netherlands), and an Award of Distinction at Prix Ars Electronica (Austria).
