O Gesto de Fazer o Ninho é um território partilhado entre as artistas Ânia Pais e Carolina Batalha, onde o têxtil se afirma como linguagem de resistência e de afeto. A exposição parte da herança artesanal portuguesa, dos pontos de Arraiolos à desfiação de tecido, para pensar o gesto de tecer como uma forma de inscrever o tempo, o corpo e a memória e o seu ato inverso como desconstrução da sua história e dos pilares da sua prisão.
Pais e Batalha aproximam-se numa prática colaborativa que dilui fronteiras autorais, explorando o potencial do fio enquanto matéria narrativa e simbólica. O fio torna-se voz, linha de continuidade e instrumento de reescrita: um meio para revisitar o legado das mulheres que, ao longo dos séculos, construíram silenciosamente as fundações do quotidiano e da cultura visual.
As obras, de grande escala e estrutura maleável, estendem-se pelo espaço como presenças vivas, corpos suspensos entre o íntimo e o coletivo. Aqui, o têxtil deixa de ser ornamento e assume-se como gesto político, corpo expandido e pensamento em processo.
O “ninho” do título alude simultaneamente à casa e ao abrigo, à construção e ao cuidado, mas também à ideia de lugar provisório, um espaço em constante construção. Com curadoria de Mariana Baião Santos, entre o gesto e o discurso, entre o fado e a emancipação, O Gesto de Fazer o Ninho propõe um reencontro com o poder transformador do fazer manual, onde cada ponto é também um ato de escuta e de pertença.

Ânia Pais / Artista visual, vive e trabalha entre a aldeia da Atalaia (Covilhã) e Lisboa. Licenciada e Mestre em Pintura pela FBAUL. A instalação é o foco principal da sua investigação, o espaço é o principal influenciador da sua prática e a paisagem a impulsionadora da sua criação. Um trabalho que se desenvolve a partir da enorme curiosidade e necessidade de fazer acontecer e viver o próprio acontecimento da criação, do seu processo.
Carolina Batalha / Carolina vive e trabalha entre Lisboa e Porto. O seu percurso artístico é marcado por uma trajetória de estudos diversificados: Design de Moda, Estamparia, e Artes Plásticas. A essência do seu trabalho reside na interseção entre o material e o imaginário: casas, lugares e ambientes são reconstruídos nas suas obras, imbuídos de uma aura de intimidade e nostalgia. Carolina utiliza a trama física e metafórica como um meio para dar forma ao caos aparente do mundo, seja através do tecido, dos cadernos ou das toalhas.
Mariana Baião Santos / Mariana Baião Santos é uma profissional da arte contemporânea e do empreendedorismo cultural. Licenciada em Design de Comunicação pela Faculdade de Belas de Lisboa em 2019 e um com mestrado em Curadoria de Arte Contemporânea pela Royal College of Arts em Londres, Mariana tem construído uma carreira diversificada no setor artístico. Recentemente, ela co-fundou a agência de arte SUPERFICIAL, sediada em Londres, que opera globalmente.

The Gesture of Nesting is a shared territory between artists Ânia Pais and Carolina Batalha, where textiles assert themselves as a language of resistance and affection. The exhibition draws on Portuguese craft heritage, from Arraiolos embroidery to fabric fraying, to consider the act of weaving as a way of inscribing time, the body and memory, and its inverse act as a deconstruction of its history and the pillars of its imprisonment.
Pais and Batalha come together in a collaborative practice that blurs authorial boundaries, exploring the potential of thread as narrative and symbolic material. The thread becomes a voice, a line of continuity and an instrument of rewriting: a means of revisiting the legacy of women who, over the centuries, have silently built the foundations of everyday life and visual culture.
The large-scale works, with their malleable structure, extend throughout the space like living presences, bodies suspended between the intimate and the collective. Here, textiles cease to be ornamental and take on a political gesture, an expanded body and thought in process.
The ‘nest’ in the title alludes simultaneously to home and shelter, to construction and care, but also to the idea of a temporary place, a space under constant construction.
Curated by Mariana Baião Santos, between gesture and discourse, between fado and emancipation, O Gesto de Fazer o Ninho proposes a reunion with the transformative power of manual labour, where each stitch is also an act of listening and belonging.

Ânia Pais / Visual artist, lives and works between the village of Atalaia (Covilhã) and Lisbon. Holds a BA and MA in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon. Installation is the main focus of her research, space is the primary influencer of her practice, and landscape is the driving force behind her creation. Her work develops from a deep curiosity and the need to make happen and experience the very event of creation and its process.
Carolina Batalha / Carolina lives and works between Lisbon and Porto. Her artistic career is marked by a diverse educational background: Fashion Design, Textile Printing, and Fine Arts. The essence of her work lies at the intersection of the material and the imaginary: houses, places, and environments are reconstructed in her pieces, imbued with an aura of intimacy and nostalgia. Carolina uses the physical and metaphorical weave as a means to shape the apparent chaos of the world, whether through fabric, notebooks, or towels.
Mariana Baião Santos / Mariana Baião Santos is a professional in contemporary art and cultural entrepreneurship. Graduated in Communication Design from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon in 2019, and holding a master’s degree in Contemporary Art Curation from the Royal College of Art in London, Mariana has built a diverse career in the art sector. Recently, she co-founded the art agency SUPERFICIAL, based in London, which operates globally.
