Nós, os artistas-investigadores Daniela Brill Estrada, Bart Kuipers e Julie-Michèle Morin, estamos a tentar comunicar com alienígenas! Transformámos a nossa casa temporária, a Cultivamos Cultura, num espaço que é, simultaneamente, laboratório de literatura, sala de ensaios e observatório especulativo.

Em colaboração com cientistas do instituto SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), tentamos traduzir dados científicos de planetas distantes (exoplanetas) em poesia, recorrendo à inteligência artificial. A poesia, por sua vez, é convertida em experiências químicas tangíveis (reações efervescentes, mudanças de cor, clarões de luz, texturas inesperadas), utilizando a química como uma linguagem lúdica para imaginar como poderíamos saudar um mundo alienígena.

Como é que se sente uma tremura no valor do pH? Como responder à atmosfera do WASP-12b? Qual o sabor das flutuações sazonais de metano e oxigénio em Marte? Em Exoplanetary Poetry, exploramos estas questões através da experimentação química, encarando-a como uma forma de escrever poesia com o cosmos, em vez de escrever sobre ele.

Este estúdio aberto é um convite para vaguear pelas experiências desenvolvidas durante a nossa residência na Cultivamos Cultura, espreitar reações químicas que ora resultam (ora não), e assistir a uma breve performance onde, de forma desajeitada, tentaremos comunicar com exoplanetários.

We, artist-researchers Daniela Brill Estrada, Bart Kuipers, and Julie-Michèle Morin, are trying to communicate with aliens! We have turned our temporary home, Cultivamos Cultura, into something between a literature laboratory, a rehearsal space, and a speculative observatory.

In collaboration with scientists from the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) institute, we try to translate scientific data from distant planets (exoplanets) into poetry, using artificial intelligence. The poetry, in its turn, is translated to tangible chemical experiences (bubbling reactions, shifting colors, flashes of light, unexpected textures), using chemistry asa playful language for imagining how we might greet an alien world.

What does a tremor in pH value feel like? How do you respond to the atmosphere on WASP-12b? What do seasonal methane and oxygen fluctuations on Mars taste like? In Exoplanetary Poetry, we explore these questions through chemical experimentation as a
way of writing poetry with, rather than about, the cosmos.

This open studio is an invitation to wander through the experiments developed during our residency at Cultivamos Cultura, peek at chemical reactions that sometimes work (and sometimes don’t), and attend a short performance where we clumsily attempt to communicate with exoplanetarians.
