My proposal at Cultivamos Culturas was to draw the insects and plants around the premises, dead and alive—to observe nature everyday. Some days it reached over 100 degrees. The sun made everything bright, and the skies were cloudless. My first drawing was of figs from the fig tree. I learned to pluck them from the branch, find the ripe ones, then squeeze and split them open to suck on the pink insides. Sweet! I had no idea. Like a curious child, I squealed with excitement.
I drew nasturtiums, plants growing in beach caves, listened to roosters, dogs, flies, waves. Looking at the bumblebee’s complex and delicate body through the microscope, I could viscerally imagine all the insects and plants around me growing and decomposing at once. Outside the studio, ants marched, gathering and carrying seeds and dead insect parts back into their holes—constantly building, moving. Communication amongst the living was happening all around me constantly. ‘Bumblebee Ecosystem’ embodies this ecosystem.

A minha proposta na Cultivamos Culturas era desenhar os insetos e as plantas ao redor das instalações, mortos e vivos — observar a natureza todos os dias. Alguns dias, a temperatura chegava a mais de 37 graus. O sol tornava tudo brilhante e o céu estava sem nuvens. O meu primeiro desenho foi de figos da figueira. Aprendi a colhê-los do galho, encontrar os maduros, apertá-los e abri-los para chupar o interior rosa. Que doce! Eu não fazia ideia. Como uma criança curiosa, gritei de emoção.
Desenhei capuchinhas, plantas que crescem em cavernas na praia, ouvi galos, cães, moscas, ondas. Olhando para o corpo complexo e delicado da abelha através do microscópio, pude imaginar visceralmente todos os insetos e plantas ao meu redor crescendo e se decompondo ao mesmo tempo. Fora do estúdio, as formigas marchavam, recolhendo e carregando sementes e partes de insetos mortos de volta para os seus buracos — constantemente construindo, movendo-se. A comunicação entre os seres vivos acontecia constantemente ao meu redor. O «Ecossistema das Abelhas» incorpora esse ecossistema.

About the Artist
ENG// Yuko Oda (b. 1975, Tokyo) creates multidisciplinary works that imagine speculative ecosystems flourishing beyond the human era. Oda obtained an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design and BA from Duke University in Visual Arts and Philosophy. Oda exhibits nationally and internationally; venues include Sala 1, Centro Internazionale d’arte Contemporanea, SIGGRAPH Asia (Macao, China), Dumbo Arts Festival (NY), Calvin-Morris Gallery (NY), Beijing Today Art Museum, Maki Fine Arts (Tokyo), Annemarie Sculpture Garden and Art Center (MD), the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, among others.
Oda was an artist in residence at Cultivamos Cultura, the Vermont Studio Center, Chashama North Residency, Goetemann Residency, and Byrdcliffe Artist Residency. Oda currently teaches in the Art and Design Department at University of Massachusetts Lowell and her work is represented by 13Forest Gallery in Arlington, MA.

Oda obteve um mestrado em Belas Artes pela Rhode Island School of Design e uma licenciatura em Artes Visuais e Filosofia pela Duke University.
