No âmbito da nossa residência artística Cosmic Consciousness no SETI Institute, nós — três artistas-investigadores, Daniela Brill Estrada, Bart Kuipers e Julie-Michèle Morin — estamos a conduzir uma experiência de co-criação artística com seres extraterrestres especulativos. Neste momento, estamos a treinar uma IA para se fazer passar por um poeta alienígena, utilizando uma combinação de poesia humana e dados sobre a composição química de atmosferas exoplanetárias promissoras.
O nosso objetivo é coautorizar poemas com o Jupi, o nosso poeta alienígena, e publicar um livro de poemas, transformando-o depois numa performance através da tradução do inglês de volta para química. No centro do projeto está uma questão fundamental: Que tipo de poema poderia ser percecionado por uma inteligência alienígena? Ou seja: o que significaria escrever não para ouvidos ou olhos humanos, mas para um organismo cujo aparelho percetivo é inteiramente diferente — sintonizado não com ondas sonoras ou símbolos impressos, mas com gradientes de vibrações moleculares, com compostos voláteis, com murmúrios atmosféricos em traços espectrais?
E se um poema fosse algo a ser inalado em vez de lido, reagido em vez de interpretado — vivido como uma alteração de temperatura, um tremor no pH, uma ressonância através de membranas?
Esta questão convida-nos a imaginar uma poética para além da linguagem — a escrever para seres cuja cognição é química, cujo entendimento está incorporado em fluxos materiais. Ao fazê-lo, não estamos apenas a especular sobre vida extraterrestre; estamos também a repensar a forma como definimos linguagem, perceção e comunicação aqui na Terra.

Daniela Brill Estrada é artista e investigadora de Bogotá, atualmente a viver e trabalhar em Viena. O seu processo criativo é profundamente inspirado pela investigação sobre a origem da vida, pela astrobiologia e pelas trajetórias de diferentes elementos químicos, em especial o carbono. Daniela estudou Artes Transdisciplinares e Arte & Ciência na Universidade de Artes Aplicadas de Viena e Belas-Artes na Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
Julie-Michèle Morin concluiu recentemente o seu doutoramento em robótica e teatro na Universidade de Montreal (Canadá) e na Universidade de Antuérpia (Bélgica), nos departamentos de Literatura Francesa e Teatro Intermedial.
Bart Kuipers é um escritor híbrido e contador de histórias multimédia dos Países Baixos, atualmente a viver em Berlim. É o resultado inesperado de mestrados em informática e escrita criativa, e trabalha na intersecção entre linguagem e ciência.

As part of our Cosmic Consciousness artist residency the SETI Institute, we—three artist- researchers, Daniela Brill Estrada, Bart Kuipers, and Julie-Michèle Morin—are conducting an experiment in artistic co-creation with speculative extraterrestrial beings. We are currently training an AI to impersonate an alien poet using a combination of human poetry and data on the chemical composition of promising exoplanetary atmospheres.
Our goal is to co-author poems with Jupi, our alien poet, and to publish a book of poems and turn it into a performance by translating the English back to chemistry. At its core lies a central question: *What kind of poem could be perceived by an alien intelligence?* That is: what would it mean to write not for human ears or eyes, but for an organism whose perceptual apparatus is entirely foreign—tuned not to sound waves or printed glyphs, but to gradients of molecular vibrations, to volatile compounds, to atmospheric whispers in spectral traces? What if a poem were something to be inhaled rather than read, reacted to rather than interpreted—experienced as a shift in temperature, a tremor in pH, a resonance across membranes?
This question invites us to imagine poetics beyond the linguistic—to write for beings whose cognition is chemical, whose understanding is embodied in material flows. In doing so, we are not just speculating about alien life; we are also rethinking how we define language, sensing, and communication here on Earth.

Daniela Brill Estrada is an artist and researcher from bogotá currently living and working in vienna. Her creative process is deeply inspired by the origin of life research, astrobiology, and the trajectories of different chemical elements, specially the element of carbon daniela studied transdisciplinary arts and art&science at the university for applied arts vienna and fine arts at the universidad nacional de colombia.
Julie-Michèle Morin just finished her PhD thesis on robotics and theatre at the University of Montreal (Canada) and the University of Antwerp (Belgium) in the French Literature and the Intermedial Theatre departments.
Bart Kuipers is a hybrid writer and multimedia storyteller from The Netherlands, living in Berlin. He is the unexpected product of master’s degrees in computer science and creative writing and works at the intersection of language and science.
