Durante esta residência, Xu Shuang irá explorar o rio Mira e os seus ambientes envolventes através de práticas ligadas à alimentação e à água, como a pesca, a colheita e a apanha de plantas silvestres. Ao envolver-se com comunidades e artesãos locais, irá investigar de que forma as plantas comestíveis, as espécies e as tradições são moldadas pelo rio e, por sua vez, o moldam.
Como parte deste processo, irá trabalhar a ideia de “ferramentas de forrageamento aquático”, que funcionam simultaneamente como objectos práticos para recolher e preparar alimentos e como meios de contar histórias. Partindo de técnicas tradicionais como a cestaria, os têxteis e a cerâmica, e utilizando materiais provenientes da paisagem do rio, pretende criar ferramentas que não só cumpram funções práticas, mas que também promovam um intercâmbio entre o seu conhecimento culinário migrante e as tradições alimentares locais de Odemira. Através deste diálogo, irá explorar de que modo sabores, técnicas e saberes se podem entrelaçar num contexto ecológico e cultural específico.

Shuang Xu é uma artista, designer e investigadora multidisciplinar que explora narrativas culturais, paisagens situadas e histórias migrantes, utilizando elementos simbólicos como guias para a sua investigação, narração e práticas artísticas. Reflete e questiona criticamente a singularidade das perspetivas e das narrativas, sobretudo no contexto da identidade, do conhecimento e da cultura. O seu foco mais recente passa por ligar plantas não nativas e nativas à terra, aos humanos e a contextos históricos. Guiada pela crença na aprendizagem situada e na metodologia do trabalho de campo, cultiva a sua prática aprendendo com o que a rodeia, exprimindo a sua investigação, observações, recolhas e descobertas através de performances gastronómicas, instalações e formas gráficas.

During this residency, Xu Shuang will explore the Mira River and its surrounding environments through food- and water-related practices such as fishing, harvesting, and foraging. By engaging with local communities and makers, she will research how edible plants, species, and traditions are shaped by and in turn shape the river.
As part of this process, she will work with the idea of “water-foraging tools” that function both as practical objects for gathering and preparing food and as mediums for storytelling. Drawing on traditional techniques such as basketry, textiles, and ceramics, and working with materials sourced from the river’s landscape, she aims to create tools that not only serve practical purposes but also facilitate an exchange between her migratory culinary knowledge and the local food traditions of Odemira. Through this dialogue, she will explore how flavors, techniques, and knowledge can intertwine in a specific ecological and cultural landscape.

Shuang Xu is a multidisciplinary artist, designer, and researcher who explores cultural narratives, situated landscapes, and migrant histories, employing symbolic elements as guides for her research, storytelling, and artistic practices. She critically reflects and disrupts the singularity of perspectives and narratives, particularly in the context of identity, knowledge, and culture. Her recent focus involves connecting non-native and native plants to the earth, humans, and historical contexts. Guided by the belief in situated learning and fieldwork methodology, she cultivates her practice by learning from the surroundings, expressing her research, observations, gatherings, and findings through food performance, installation, and graphic forms.
The OaSis consortium and host institutions
The project is created by the unique consortium of almost 20 diverse institutions – including NGOs, culture institutions, municipalities and a university. Open Art Spaces (OASis) in Action combines 13 interdisciplinary art venues in 10 countries (Armenia, Belgium, France, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia and Slovenia) that reflect the modern model of the open art center which merges local context with international art exchange.
