A Senciência é a capacidade de perceber, sentir e experimentar subjetivamente — uma pedra basilar da consciência que nos liga ao mundo que nos rodeia. Desde os organismos mais simples que percecionam o seu ambiente até à profunda autoconsciência dos humanos, a senciência incorpora a intrincada interação entre a vida, a perceção e a existência.
A Escola de Verão deste ano convida os participantes a aprofundar o conceito de senciência, explorando as suas profundas implicações nos reinos biológico, filosófico, tecnológico e artístico. A senciência desafia-nos a considerar os limites da consciência: onde começa a perceção? Como é que as diferentes formas de vida experienciam o mundo? Que responsabilidades surgem quando reconhecemos a senciência nos outros, sejam humanos, animais ou máquinas?
No mundo natural, a senciência manifesta-se como a capacidade de responder a estímulos, de se adaptar às mudanças e de procurar a sobrevivência. Na era da inteligência artificial e da robótica, as questões da sensibilidade das máquinas obrigam-nos a reconsiderar a natureza da experiência e da agência ética. As expressões artísticas de sensibilidade convidam-nos a imaginar perspetivas para além das nossas, expandindo a empatia e aprofundando a nossa compreensão da existência.
Através de uma viagem multidisciplinar, os participantes irão explorar a senciência como um tema que une a ciência, a filosofia e a arte. Workshops, discussões e projetos criativos irão investigar como a senciência molda as nossas interações, a nossa compreensão dos outros seres e as nossas visões do futuro.
Ao refletir sobre a senciência, esperamos promover novos insights sobre as nossas experiências partilhadas e diversas do ser, gerando trabalhos inovadores e significativos que iluminem a essência da consciência em todas as suas formas.
A interseção entre Arte, Biologia e Meio Ambiente oferece oportunidades únicas para artistas visuais. Este inovador curso de verão, que já está na sua décima primeira edição, permitirá que não especialistas adquiram habilidades teóricas e práticas em ciências biológicas e ambientais em conexão com as artes visuais.
A Escola de Verão explora a relação interdisciplinar entre arte, vida e ciências ambientais por meio de exercícios práticos, combinando teoria e prática em um ambiente informal, como seminários, debates, visitas e a criação de obras de arte com mídia biológica. As atividades na Escola de Verão na Cultivamos Cultura abordarão questões como as representações culturais de tecnologia e ciência, preocupações éticas e a evolução da bioarte como fenómeno cultural. Um programa de uma semana com a oportunidade de estender a estadia por uma ou duas semanas adicionais para desenvolver um projeto de arte em um ambiente colaborativo.
O componente prático concentrar-se-á em exercícios práticos no laboratório, oficinas e no ambiente natural. A possibilidade de transformar conceitos abstratos em objetos de arte, a recolha e seleção de organismos para fins artísticos a serem destacados, e, finalmente, visitas a diferentes partes do parque natural.
O curso deixará bastante espaço para actividades informais e para um programa cultural e social.
O custo será de 850€ para a primeira semana e 650€ para as duas semanas opcionais seguintes. O preço inclui alojamento partilhado na Cultivamos Cultura (uma quinta), refeições, propinas e consumíveis gerais para o curso; de 14 a 18 de julho para a primeira semana, de 21 a 25 de julho para a segunda semana e de 28 de julho a 1 de agosto para a terceira semana (os fins-de-semana estão incluídos entre as semanas do curso e serão dedicados a actividades de convívio e lazer).

Sentience is the capacity to perceive, feel, and experience subjectively—a cornerstone of consciousness that connects us to the world around us. From the simplest organisms sensing their environment to the profound self-awareness of humans, sentience embodies the intricate interplay between life, perception, and existence.
This year’s Summer School invites participants to delve into the concept of sentience, exploring its profound implications across biological, philosophical, technological, and artistic realms. Sentience challenges us to consider the boundaries of consciousness: Where does awareness begin? How do different forms of life experience the world? What responsibilities arise when we recognize sentience in others, whether human, animal, or machine?
In the natural world, sentience manifests as the ability to respond to stimuli, adapt to change, and seek survival. In the age of artificial intelligence and robotics, questions of machine sentience force us to reconsider the nature of experience and ethical agency. Artistic expressions of sentience invite us to imagine perspectives beyond our own—expanding empathy and deepening our understanding of existence.
Through a multidisciplinary journey, participants will explore sentience as a theme that bridges science, philosophy, and art. Workshops, discussions, and creative projects will probe how sentience shapes our interactions, our understanding of other beings, and our visions of the future.
By reflecting on sentience, we hope to foster new insights into our shared and diverse experiences of being—sparking innovative and meaningful works that illuminate the essence of awareness in all its forms.
The intersection of Art, Biology, and the Environment offers unique opportunities to visual artists. This innovative summer course, which is already on its eleventh edition, will allow non-specialists to acquire theoretical and practical skills in biological and environmental sciences in connection to the visual arts.
The Summer School explores the interdisciplinary relationship between art, life and environmental sciences through hands-on exercises, combining theory and practice in an informal environment, e.g.: seminars, debates, visits, and the creation of artworks with biological media. The activities in the Summer School at Cultivamos Cultura will address issues such as the cultural representations of technology and science, ethical concerns and the evolution of bioart as a cultural phenomenon. One week program with the opportunity to extend the stay for one or two additional weeks to develop an art project in a collaborative environment.
The practical component will focus on hands-on exercises in the laboratory, workshops, and within the natural environment. The possibility of transforming abstract concepts into art objects, the collection and selection of organisms for artistic purposes will be highlighted, and, finally, visits to different parts of the natural park, will take place.
The course will leave plenty of room for informal activities and a cultural and social program.
The cost will be 850€ for the first week and 650€ for the optional 2 weeks after. The price includes shared accommodation at Cultivamos Cultura (a farmhouse), meals, tuition, and general consumables for the course; from 14th July to 18th July for the first week, 21-25 July for the second week, and 28 July -1 August for the third week (weekends are included between course weeks and will be dedicated to socializing and leisure activities).
