PT// Durante a minha residência na Cultivamos Cultura, vou estar a explorar o parque natural e a aldeia de São Luís para captar imagens e vídeos para um projeto em desenvolvimento. Los Desaparecidos (Os Desaparecidos) é uma peça de performance ao vivo baseada no filme de longa-metragem, The Saguaro Club. Chanthy Oum, uma sobrevivente do Khmer Rouge, abre um pequeno restaurante de estrada com um grupo de amigos no Arizona. Eles estão ali para se reinventar e sonhar com uma vida diferente, uma que não seja definida pelo trauma, mas os fantasmas do seu passado seguem-nos. À medida que se preparam para a celebração anual do Dia de Los Muertos – Dia dos Mortos, abrem inadvertidamente a porta para Los Desaparecidos. Vamos explorar estes espíritos como uma manifestação de energia que será ilustrada com dança, música e ondas de rádio emanando da aldeia e do deserto próximos. Estarei a filmar as cenas de “manifestação de energia” para a peça na aldeia de São Luís e nas colinas circundantes do Alentejo. Os resultados da residência serão utilizados na performance ao vivo de Los Desaparecidos (Os Desaparecidos) nos EUA.

James Higgins fundou a Flying Orb Productions em 2005, juntamente com duas bailarinas principais do Angkor Dance Troupe, Monica Veth e Sophy Leng. Em 2007, o seu primeiro curta-metragem, Ephemera, estreou no Egyptian Theatre em Hollywood, CA, ganhando o prémio Golden Star New Frontiers. Desde então, as suas curtas-metragens e espetáculos teatrais têm sido exibidos em muitos festivais na costa leste e oeste dos EUA. Em 2024, concluíram o trabalho do seu primeiro filme de longa-metragem, The Saguaro Club.
EN// During my residency at Cultivamos Cultura I will be exploring the natural park and the village of São Luis for still and video footage for an upcoming project. “Los Desaparecidos (The Missing)” is a live performance art piece based on our feature length film, The Saguaro Club. Chanthy Oum, a survivor of the Khmer Rouge, opens a small roadhouse restaurant with a group of friends in Arizona. They’re here to re-invent themselves and dream a different life, one not defined by trauma, but ghosts from their past follow them. As they prepare for the annual Dia de Los Muertos – Day of the Dead Celebration, they unknowingly open the door to Los Desaparecidos. We will be exploring these spirits as a manifestation of energy that will be illustrated with dance, music and radio waves emanating from the nearby village and desert. I will be shooting the “manifestation of energy” scenes for the play in the village of São Luis and in the surrounding hills of Alentejo. The results of the residency will be used for the life performance of “Los Desaparecidos (The Missing)” in the USA.

James Higgins founded Flying Orb Productions in 2005 along with two principal dancers from Angkor Dance Troupe, Monica Veth and Sophy Leng. In 2007 their first short film, Ephemera, premiered at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, CA, winning the Golden Star New Frontiers award. Since then their short films and theater shows have played in many festivals on both the East and West coast. In 2024 they finished work on their first feature length film, The Saguaro Club.
