PT// SEMENTES
O projeto consiste na produção de esculturas em cerâmica representando as sementes de plantas maioritariamente autóctones do Baixo Alentejo e do Alentejo Litoral e na investigação sobre as sementes e as plantas. As sementes são recolhidas na região, tanto na natureza como em bancos de sementes e viveiros. Com um microscópio, tiro fotografias das sementes e seleciono as que quero transformar em esculturas de cerâmica. Utilizo engobes e esmaltes cerâmicos inspirados nas cores das plantas. As esculturas têm entre 15 e 20 cm de diâmetro, o que corresponde a uma ampliação de 200 vezes (consoante a semente). A semente da cenoura selvagem (Daucus carota), por exemplo, tem um diâmetro de cerca de 2 mm, o que significa que a sua extrema beleza não é visível ao olho humano, que só consegue distinguir um objeto minúsculo e indefinido. As esculturas são concebidas e entendidas como obras de arte inspiradas em sementes. A partir de um determinado momento, distancio-me da imagem microscópica em busca de uma coerência estética na obra. O objetivo não é uma representação 100% naturalista, mas sim uma tentativa de transmitir o momento de espanto e admiração que se sente cada vez que o microscópio transforma uma semente minúscula e impercetível numa imagem de estranha beleza abstrata, com as formas mais delicadas e surpreendentes. O objetivo da exposição é sensibilizar e despertar o interesse pelas sementes e plantas apresentadas, criar conhecimento sobre as plantas e as suas características, bem como despertar a curiosidade sobre as suas estratégias (inerentes à sua forma física). Numa altura em que a biodiversidade está mais ameaçada do que nunca e a uma escala global, é necessária uma mudança de paradigma na forma como olhamos e nos relacionamos com o ambiente. A arte pode ser uma ferramenta poderosa para gerar conhecimento e ligação com a natureza e, em última análise, a vontade de a proteger.
EN// SEMENTES [SEEDS]
The project consists of the production of ceramic sculptures depicting the seeds of plants that are mostly native to the Baixo Alentejo and coastal Alentejo regions and research about the seeds and plants. The seeds are collected in the region, both in the wild and in seed banks and nurseries. I use a microscope to take pictures of the seeds and select the ones I want to make into ceramic sculptures. I use engobes and ceramic glazes inspired by the colours of the plants. The sculptures are between 15 and 20 cm in diameter, which corresponds to a magnification of 200 times (depending on the seed). The seed of the wild carrot (Daucus carota), for example, has a diameter of about 2 mm, which means that its extreme beauty is not visible to the human eye, which can only distinguish a tiny, undefined object. The sculptures are conceived and understood as works of art inspired by seeds. From a certain moment, I distance myself from the microscopic image in search of aesthetic coherence in the work. The goal is not a 100% naturalistic representation, but rather an attempt to convey the moment of awe and wonder felt each time the microscope transforms a tiny, imperceptible seed into an image of strange abstract beauty, with the most delicate and surprising shapes. The aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness and interest in the seeds and plants shown, to create knowledge about the plants and their characteristics, as well as to arouse curiosity about their strategies (inherent in their physical form). At a time when biodiversity is more threatened than ever and on a global scale, we need to paradigm shift in the way we look at and relate to the environment. Art can be a powerful tool to generate knowledge and connection with nature and, ultimately, the will to protect it.

Maya Fernandes Kempe (Berlim, 1975) é arte pedagoga e escultora. Estudou filosofia e literatura (NDL) na Universidade de Berlim (FU), e formou-se em Pedagogia da Arte (PFH). É escultora/ ceramista autodidata, e professora de arte desde 2005, tendo exercido enquanto pedagoga artística. É fundadora do Espaço Azul, em Lisboa e co-fundadora do espaço Ateneu do Catorze, em São Luís, onde reside.
Maya Fernandes Kempe (Berlin, 1975) is an art pedagogue and sculptor. She studied philosophy and literature (NDL) at the University of Berlin (FU), and graduated in Art Pedagogy (PFH). She is a self-taught sculptor/ ceramist, and art teacher since 2005, having practiced as an art pedagogue. She is founder of Espaço Azul, in Lisbon and co-founder of the space Ateneu do Catorze, in São Luís, where she is based.
