Quando vamos avançando pelo tempo fora, se olharmos para trás, podemos talvez imaginar que o caminho que percorremos vai ficando queimado e consequentemente impossível de percorrer novamente.
A direção do tempo. O tempo é uma constante e tem apenas uma direção na vida. Enquanto os nossos sentidos nos dizem onde e quando estamos a qualquer altura, podemos também pensar no tempo como uma sequência de “entretantos”. No tempo, não importa quantas vezes tentemos reverter a direção, não conseguimos voltar atrás. Ou podemos?
Burnt Paths é uma exposição que junta trabalhos de artistas muito diferentes, que estão em fases muito diferentes das suas práticas. No entanto, têm todos ligações muito fortes ao tempo, a um caminho, a um momento que não se pode voltar a repetir. Em alguns casos porque esse momento se forma e é expresso através de um processo de transformação, uma impressão de um instante físico que se transforma numa oxidação química. Ou porque as imagens que compõem a peça foram produzidas explicitamente num jogo entre a intenção encontrada nas condições iniciais e a aleatoriedade percebida que não poderá repetir-se. Os trabalhos aqui presentes começam por nos dar a conhecer as condições para que a vida avance, passam por dar uma forma ao espaço entre a pegada/passo e o chão, a relação entre o corpo e o papel através do pó de cobre e do suor da artista, a materialidade da areia e a forma como esta intermedeia o espaço entre o líquido e o sólido, e vai até à escala dos nutrientes que permitem às plantas crescer melhor juntas do que individualmente, ou os minerais que apoiam e suportam a vida.

As you are going through time, if you look back, you can imagine that the path you have gone through is now burnt and impossible to go through again.
The direction of time. Time is a constant direction in life, while our senses tell us where and when we are at any given time, we can also think of time as a sequence of in-betweens. In time, no matter how many times you may want to reverse direction, you cannot go back. Or can you?
Burnt Paths is an exhibition that brings together works from very different artists, at different stages of their practice. However, they all have very strong referential connections to a direction of time, to a path, to a in between moment that cannot be recovered. Either because this moment becomes form and is expressed through a process of transformation, as a print of an instant turned into a physical and chemical process of oxidation. Or because the work itself is completely dedicated to the interfaces between spaces that are composed of different matter and mediated by the body of the artist. Or even because the images are explicitly made through a process of intention and perceived randomness that cannot ever be repeated again. The works range from setting the stage for life to grow, to giving form to the space between the foot/step and the floor it lands on, the relationship between body and the paper through the copper powder and the sweat of the artist, the materiality of the sand and the way it mediates the space between the liquid and the solid, the nutrients that allow the plants to grow better together or the minerals that support and scaffold growth.
