O artista visual e realizador James Higgins e o performer e artista-educador Tim Sokhoeun propõem uma curta residência criativa na região de Odemira, no sul de Portugal. Ambos os artistas partilham um interesse por práticas interdisciplinares que cruzam movimento, narrativa e expressão visual, envolvendo diferentes comunidades.
Durante a residência, Higgins e Sokhoeun irão explorar a interseção das suas práticas individuais — a abordagem conceptual de Higgins à performance visual e o trabalho de Sokhoeun centrado no movimento, enraizado na cura e na expressão criativa. A sua investigação irá integrar movimento com fotografia, projeção e som, experimentando novas formas de narrativa visual e corporal.
Como parte da residência, os artistas pretendem dinamizar workshops de movimento dirigidos à comunidade local e a aspirantes a artistas performativos em Odemira, uma região conhecida pela sua diversidade cultural. Estes workshops convidarão participantes de diferentes origens a envolverem-se em exercícios simples de movimento e narrativa, promovendo a ligação, a criatividade e a expressão coletiva. A residência será simultaneamente um espaço de exploração artística e uma oportunidade de intercâmbio cultural com a comunidade local.
James Higgins é um artista visual e realizador, fundador da Flying Orb Productions, que estabeleceu em 2005 com as bailarinas principais da Angkor Dance Troupe, Monica Veth e Sophy Leng. O seu trabalho é altamente conceptual e frequentemente cruza cinema, performance, movimento e narrativa visual, colaborando com artistas de diversas comunidades culturais.
A primeira curta-metragem da Flying Orb, Ephemera, estreou no Egyptian Theatre em 2007, onde recebeu o prémio Golden Star New Frontiers. Desde então, os filmes e trabalhos performativos de Higgins têm sido apresentados em festivais e espaços ao longo das costas Este e Oeste dos Estados Unidos. Em 2024, a Flying Orb concluiu a sua primeira longa-metragem, The Saguaro Club. O seu projeto atual, Los Desaparecidos, é uma nova produção da Flying Orb apresentada em parceria com a Angkor Dance Troupe. Combinando dança contemporânea, teatro e música, a obra explora temas como identidade, migração e a resiliência de comunidades em contexto de deslocação, oferecendo uma perspetiva poderosa sobre a experiência humana.
Tim Sokhoeun é um performer e artista-educador baseado em Lowell, Massachusetts. Filho de refugiados cambojanos sobreviventes do genocídio do Khmer Rouge, cresceu numa família numerosa onde a música, a dança e a performance se tornaram formas importantes de expressão e ligação.
Começou a atuar em concursos de talentos na escola e mais tarde integrou o grupo de hip-hop Emphatic Force e a companhia Static Noyze Dance Company, de Boston, participando em competições como o World of Dance. Paralelamente à performance, trabalhou com jovens em risco através de um programa de um centro de saúde comunitário, utilizando a dança hip-hop como ferramenta de expressão criativa, cura e educação.
Mais tarde, Sokhoeun expandiu a sua prática para o teatro com a Flying Orb Productions, começando com o papel de um jovem ogre em Nectar of Immortality. Desde então, participou em vários projetos de palco e cinema, incluindo Apsara Dancing Stone e a performance multimédia Los Desaparecidos, onde o movimento e a narrativa são utilizados para explorar memória, identidade e cura coletiva.
Visual artist and filmmaker James Higgins and performer and teaching artist Tim Sokhoeun propose a short creative residency in the region of Odemira, Southern Portugal. Both artists share an interest in interdisciplinary practices that bring together movement, storytelling, and visual expression, while engaging with diverse communities.
During the residency, Higgins and Sokhoeun will explore the intersection of their individual practices—Higgins’ conceptual approach to visual performance and Sokhoeun’s movement-based work rooted in healing and creative expression. Their research will incorporate movement alongside photography, projection, and sound, experimenting with new forms of visual and embodied storytelling.
As part of the residency, the artists aim to offer community movement workshops for aspiring performing artists in Odemira, a region known for its cultural diversity. These workshops will invite participants from different backgrounds to engage in simple movement and storytelling exercises that encourage connection, creativity, and collective expression. The residency will function both as a space for artistic exploration and as an opportunity for cultural exchange with the local community.

Tim Sokhoeun is a performer and teaching artist based in Lowell, Massachusetts. The son of Cambodian refugees who survived the Khmer Rouge genocide, he grew up in a large family where music, dance, and performance became important forms of expression and connection.
He began performing in middle school talent shows and later joined the hip-hop group Emphatic Force and Boston’s Static Noyze Dance Company, competing in events such as World of Dance. Alongside performing, he worked with at-risk youth through a community health center program, using hip-hop dance as a tool for creative expression, healing, and education.
Sokhoeun later expanded into theatre with Flying Orb Productions, beginning with the role of a young Ogre in Nectar of Immortality. He has since appeared in several stage and film projects, including Apsara Dancing Stone and the multimedia performance Los Desaparecidos, where movement and storytelling are used to explore memory, identity, and collective healing.
