TERRA LÍQUIDA, POTENCIAL DO BARRO SELVAGEM
Durante a minha residência, quero descobrir áreas na região onde possa extrair barro diretamente do solo e aprofundar os meus conhecimentos sobre o barro selvagem e o seu processamento.
Quero caminhar sozinha pela região, procurando e encontrando barro, trabalhar parcialmente ao ar livre no campo, fazer moldes de plantas, pedras e outros objetos, encher cavidades com barro líquido e deixar-me guiar pelo barro e pelo seu redor, sem ter de produzir resultados concretos e apresentáveis.
Mas também quero trazer as diferentes terras para a cultivamos cultura, criando misturas
e experimentando com barro em várias fases, liquido, em pó e maleável. Vou testar a plasticidade dos diferentes barros e fazer testes de cozedura. Para a obra final, tenho algo suspenso em mente, sem saber ainda de que forma, pois isso será o resultado da minha pesquisa artística.
BIO
Maya Kempe Fernandes é uma escultora-ceramista e arte-pedagoga de origem alemã, residente em Portugal e fluente na língua portuguesa. Nasceu em Berlim, Alemanha em 1975, estudou filosofia e literatura contemporânea alemã (NDL) na Freie Universität Berlin, formou-se em Pedagogia da Arte no Pestalozzi-Froebel-Haus em Berlim e no Instituto PÄDIKO (Pädagogische Initiativen und Kommunikation) em Kiel. Recebeu formação em escultura cerâmica com diversos professores europeus como Nathalie Schnider-Lang, Christina Raedecker, Phillippe Chazot e Bodil Eide. Fundou o “Espaço Azul“ (espaço de experiências artísticas para crianças) em Lisboa em 2005. Trabalhou com os museus estatais de Berlim (SMB) em vários projetos de arte comunitária entre 2007 e 2014. Expõem o seu trabalho de escultura cerâmica com frequência desde 2016 na Alemanha e em Portugal, destacando a exposição individual no Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência (MUHNAC) com o projecto SEMENTES, em Lisboa em 2024 e a exposição individual no Museu de Olaria em Barcelos em 2025. Em 2024 realizou o projeto de arte participativa “CRIATURAS FANTÁSTICAS”.
Maya é co-fundadora da Associação Cultural e Artística Ateneu do Catorze, em São Luís e faz parte do grupo de escultores-ceramistas portugueses “Convergências“, que em 2024 realizou o projecto “CERÂMICA XL” (apoiado pela DgArtes) – esculturas cerâmicas em grande formato com exposições a partir de fevereiro 2025 no Museu de Alpiarça, no Centro de Artes das Caldas da Rainha e no Convento de Cristo em Tomar. Actualmente está a realizar um projecto artístico-pedagógico no âmbito do plano nacional das artes: „CLAYGROUND“, que consiste em criar uma área de exploração do material barro em todos os seus estados físicos no recinto escolar. Em simultâneo está a realizar uma residência artística de pesquisa colaborativa com a artista têxtil Ana Baleia, projeto a que chamaram LINHA-TERRA.

LIQUID EARTH, WILD CLAY POTENTIAL
During my residency, I want to discover areas in the region where I can extract clay directly from the soil and deepen my knowledge of wild clay and its processing. I want to hike alone in the region, searching for and finding wild clays, work partly outdoors in the countryside, make casts of plants, stones, and other objects, pour out cavities with liquid clay and let myself be guided by the clay and its surroundings, without having to produce concrete, presentable results.
But I also want to bring the different earth to cultivamos cultura, creating mixtures and experiencing with the clay in various stages, liquefied, as a powder and malleable. I will test the plasticity of the different clays and do firing tests. For the final artwork I have something hanging in mind, not yet knowing in what form, as that will be the result of my artistic research.

Maya Fernandes Kempe is a sculptor-ceramist and art educator of German origin, residing in Portugal and fluent in Portuguese. Born in Berlin, Germany, in 1975, she studied philosophy and contemporary German literature (NDL) at Freie Universität Berlin and graduated in Art Education at Pestalozzi-Froebel Haus in Berlin and at the PÄDIKO Institute (Pädagogische Initiativen und Kommunikation) in Kiel.
She received training in ceramic sculpture from various European teachers such as Nathalie Schnider-Lang, Christina Raedecker, Phillippe Chazot, and Bodil Eide. She founded the “Espaço Azul” (a space for artistic experiences for children) in Lisbon in 2005. She worked with the Berlin State Museums (SMB) on various community art projects between 2007 and 2014.
She has frequently exhibited her ceramic sculpture work since 2016 in Germany and Portugal, notably with a solo exhibition at the National Museum of Natural History and Science (MUHNAC) with the SEMENTES project in Lisbon in 2024 and a solo exhibition at the Pottery Museum in Barcelos in 2025. In 2024, she carried out the participatory art project “CRIATURAS FANTÁSTICAS”. Maya is co-founder of the Ateneu do Catorze Cultural and Artistic Association in São Luís and is part of the group of Portuguesesculptors and ceramists “Convergências,” who in 2024 carried out the project “CERÂMICA
XL” (supported by DgArtes) – large-format ceramic sculptures with exhibitions starting in February 2025 at the Alpiarça Museum, the Caldas da Rainha Arts Center, and the Convent of Christ in Tomar. She is currently carrying out an artistic-educational project within the scope of the national arts plan: “CLAYGROUND,” which consists of creating a area for exploring clay in all its physical states on school grounds. At the same time, she is carrying out a collaborative artistic research residency with textile artist Ana Baleia, a project they have called LINHA-TERRA.
