Explorando o confronto e as relações entre humanos e não-humanos, Brès questiona as ficções  antropocêntricas da “Natureza”, que tornam difícil reconhecer a nossa existência numa ecologia  interligada. Construindo um mundo não-humano em que os javalis são os principais protagonistas,  esta obra de ficção experimental utiliza ferramentas de ecologia quantitativa para ajudar a desenvolver  o seu argumento – incluindo sistemas de mapeamento geoespacial e uma vara de javalis animados por  algoritmos. Manipulando pontos de dados, Brès usa a cartografia como ferramenta para abrir novas  perspectivas de alianças entre humanos e não-humanos. Situado algures entre o real e o virtual, o  mundo que a artista constrói ajuda-nos a imaginar formas alternativas de ver o mundo, confrontando  as filosofias antropocêntricas prevalecentes com a especulação de um comunismo dos vivos. Va, Toto!, de Pierre Creton, é uma narrativa experimental ensaística em que um javali bebé, Toto, é  resgatado e criado por Madeleine, uma elegante senhora idosa que vive na zona rural da Normandia…  Embora a história pareça, à primeira vista, um conto de fadas, na realidade é tudo verdade, pois  Madeleine é mesmo vizinha de Creton e os acontecimentos narrados foram filmados à medida que  iam acontecendo. Esta mistura subtil entre a realidade quotidiana e uma certa magia cinematográfica  fazem de Va, Toto! um dos filmes mais originais e encantadores dos últimos tempos. 

Creton é, ele próprio, um animal artístico raro, na medida em que, paralelamente à sua atividade  cinematográfica, trabalha como trabalhador agrícola e considera-se um amador ou “pintor de  domingo”, cujos filmes devem adaptar-se aos ritmos da sua vida profissional e, para além disso, aos  ritmos da natureza. No caso de Va, Toto!, há muitos anos que Pierre desejava filmar a sua vizinha  Madeleine, que sempre recusou os seus avanços artísticos, até ao dia em que Toto, um órfão cuja  verdadeira mãe tinha sido morta por caçadores, apareceu na vida da senhora – altura em que ela  convidou Pierre a entrar no seu mundo para filmar a história do jovem javali. 

O material filmado diariamente por Creton durante um período de oito meses constitui o núcleo  narrativo do filme-ensaio que ele viria a elaborar em Va, Toto! Para além da relação entre Madeleine  e Toto, o filme conta duas outras histórias paralelas: uma viagem à Índia empreendida pelo  companheiro de Pierre, Vincent Barré, para estudar os macacos sagrados de Shimla; e mais perto de  casa, os sonhos inquietantes de Joseph, um vizinho com problemas respiratórios, que é obrigado a usar  um ventilador mecânico dia e noite… 

O entrelaçamento destas três histórias verídicas e a elegância formal do filme no seu conjunto, com a  sua composição pictórica, a sua bela luz e os seus efeitos de ecrã dividido, produzem uma criação  cinematográfica única e absolutamente original – uma espécie de filme de mistério natural, que conta  certamente com a melhor interpretação de um javali na história do cinema! Exploring the confrontation and relationships between humans and non-humans, Brès questions the anthropocentric fictions of “Nature”, which make it difficult to recognize our existence in an interconnected ecology. Constructing a non-human world in which wild boars are the main protagonists, this work of experimental fiction uses tools from quantitative ecology to help develop its argument – including geospatial mapping systems and an algorithmically animated wild boar pod. By manipulating data points, Brès uses cartography as a tool to open up new perspectives on alliances between humans and non-humans. Situated somewhere between the real and the virtual, the world the artist builds helps us to imagine alternative ways of seeing the world, confronting the prevailing anthropocentric philosophies with the speculation of a communism of the living. Pierre Creton’s Va, Toto! is an experimental essayistic narrative in which a baby boar, Toto, is rescued and raised by Madeleine, an elegant old lady who lives in the Normandy countryside… Although the story seems like a fairy tale at first glance, in reality, it’s all true, as Madeleine is actually Creton’s neighbor and the events narrated were filmed as they happened. This subtle blend of everyday reality and a certain cinematic magic makes Va, Toto! one of the most original and enchanting films of recent times.

Creton himself is a rare artistic animal in that, alongside his filmmaking, he works as a farm laborer and considers himself an amateur or “Sunday painter”, whose films must adapt to the rhythms of his professional life and, moreover, to the rhythms of nature. In the case of Va, Toto!, for many years Pierre had wanted to film his neighbor Madeleine, who had always refused his artistic advances, until the day Toto, an orphan whose real mother had been killed by hunters, appeared in the lady’s life – at which point she invited Pierre into her world to film the story of the young boar.

The material filmed daily by Creton over a period of eight months constitutes the narrative core of the essay film he would elaborate in Va, Toto! In addition to the relationship between Madeleine and Toto, the film tells two other parallel stories: a trip to India undertaken by Pierre’s companion, Vincent Barré, to study the sacred monkeys of Shimla; and closer to home, the disturbing dreams of Joseph, a neighbor with respiratory problems, who is forced to use a mechanical ventilator day and night…

The interweaving of these three true stories and the formal elegance of the film as a whole, with its pictorial composition, its beautiful lighting and its split-screen effects, produce a unique and absolutely original cinematographic creation – a kind of natural mystery film, which certainly features the best performance by a wild boar in the history of cinema!
