Love and Community

PT// A intenção do projeto é representar os habitantes da comunidade de São Luís numa exposição fotográfica. As fotografias têm como foco a contribuição individual de cada um para a comunidade, contribuição esta que parte do seu amor pela comunidade. As imagens capturam o amor que as pessoas sentem dentro e pela sua comunidade. Materializam o que é mais amado dentro da comunidade e a forma como esse amor é expresso.

Ao iluminar os habitantes de São Luís, a exposição cria uma oportunidade para cada habitante mostrar o que fazem pela sua comunidade. O que é amado enquanto é amado? O que é que determina a ação individual? Como é que afeta a vida na comunidade? Há alguma narrativa comum desta experiência partilhada de amar? Como é que o amor se representa a si mesmo visualmente? Como é que o amor, enquanto uma força de ligação da vida e uma motivação insconsciente da ação individual e comunitária, molda as estruturas e vivencias da comunidade? As fotografias serão tiradas pela investigadora e pelos próprios habitantes. Ao incluir entrevistas durante o processo de criar uma imagem representativa do seu amor, eles próprios se tornam nos investigadores. O foco da atenção pode ser objetos, seres vivos, sentimentos ou experiências de amor criativamente expressados e capturados pelas câmaras.

ENG// The project intends to represent the inhabitants of the São Luís community in a photo exhibition. The pictures focus on everyones individual contribution to the community driven by their love for their community. The images capture the love people feel for or within their community. They visualize what is being loved most within the community and how this love is expressed. By shining a light on the inhabitants of São Luís the exhibition creates an opportunity for people to show what they do for their community. What is loved when being loved? How it determines individual actions? How it affects community life? Is there an common narrative of a shared experience of love? How does love represents itself visually? How does love as an operating bonding life force and underlying motivation of individual and communal actions shape local structures of communal life, shared goods and common visions? The pictures will be taken by either the researcher or by the people themselves. By including the interviewees in creating a representative image of their love, they become researchers themselves. The center point of attention can be objects, living beings, feelings or experiences of love creatively to be expressed and captured by the camera.

Sylvia Babke is a community researcher based on Portugal’s Westcoast. She is the co-founder of Vale Azul and co-creator of an Ocean Community to be. As a co-worker in Tamera and Vale da Lama she has been living and contributing to many community-based projects in Portugal. She holds a Master’s degree in Sociology in technical Science at Technical University of Berlin and a Master’s degree in Arts in Photography and Urban Cultures at Goldsmiths University of London.

Sylvia Babke é uma investigadora comunitária que vive e atua atualmente em Portugal, entre o Alentejo e o Algarve. É co-fundadora do Vale Azul e co-criada de uma futura comunidade oceânica. Enquanto trabalha na comunidade Tamera e na Vale da Lama tem vivido e contribuído para diferentes projetos de base comunitária em Portugal. É mestre em Sociologia nas Ciências Técnicas pela Technical University of Berlin, como também em Artes em Fotografia e Culturas Urbanas pela Goldsmiths University of London.
