“O Plantoceno” é uma investigação artística que procura abordar subjetividades não humanas numa perspetiva pós-humanista, a partir da nossa condição humana, num cenário transdisciplinar entre a arte e a ciência. Esta investigação propõe repensar a forma como co-habitamos com agentes não-humanos, agora afastados duma condição de submissão, através de uma nova perspetiva sobre a narrativa do Antropoceno. Esta nova perspetiva baseia-se numa era geológica inventada, mas ainda viável, com uma compreensão que exige que saiamos de nós próprios e do nosso papel de protagonistas na conceção do mundo. O nome “Plantoceno” surge em oposição ao Antropoceno (uma época geológica recentemente conceptualizada, cujo protagonista é o ser humano e os seus impactos no planeta). Considerando os efeitos da fotossíntese na composição do planeta, se diferenciamos um Antropoceno, porque não um Plantoceno?

A um nível formal, o Plantoceno começa como uma investigação artística sobre o confronto entre o reino vegetal e a sociedade humana, que questiona a hegemonia da nossa espécie. A área de estudo será a residência e os seus arredores (portanto, locais com processos ambientais e biológicos ativos e evidentes são preferíveis, tais como os que se encontram em áreas naturais ou em ambientes abandonados).

Metodologia: A Paula inicia processos orgânicos e depois estuda as interações com os agentes ambientais-mentais e com os seres vivos. Desta forma, aborda o ambiente e os seus habitantes (que se tornam colaboradores) através de um ponto de vista especulado de não-humanos. Estes processos serão complementados por outras metodologias científicas e artísticas de observação da flora e fauna, com o objetivo de recolher diferentes histórias de não-humanos. O resultado vai: (1) narrar histórias à medida que surgem das interações com os humanos e com o processo orgânico iniciado, (2) oferecer uma consciência do espaço de residência através de sensibilidades não humanas, (3) e (quando possível) desenvolver intervenções espaciais que aumentem a biodiversidade como uma “residência temporária ou permanente para não-humanos”.

“The Plantocene” is an artistic research that aims to explore the challenge of approaching non-human subjectivities from our human condition in a transdisciplinary setting somewhere between art and science, from a post-humanist perspective. The research proposes to rethink the way we co-inhabit with non-human agents, now relegated to a condition of subalternity, through a new perspective on the narrative of the Anthropocene explained from another point of view. This new perspective is based on an invented, but yet feasible, geological era. Its understanding requires getting out of ourselves and our protagonist role in the conception of the world. The name of the Plantocene arises in opposition to the Anthropocene (a recently conceptualised geological epoch whose protagonist is the human being and its impacts on the planet). Considering the effects of photosynthesis in the composition of the planet, if we differentiate an Anthropocene, why not a Plantocene?

At a formal level, the Plantocene begins as an artistic research about the confrontation between the plant kingdom and human society, which questions the hegemony of our species. The study area will be the residence and its surroundings (therefore, locations where environmental and biological processes are active and evident are preferable, such as those located in natural areas or those within abandoned surroundings).

Methodology: Paula starts organic processes and then study the interactions with environmental agents and with the living beings. In this way, she approaches the environment and its inhabitants (which become collaborators) by means of a speculated non-humans’ point of view. These processes will be complemented by other scientific and artistic methodologies of flora and fauna observation, with the aim of collecting non-humans’ particular stories. The result will: (1) narrate their stories as they arise from the interactions with humans and with the organic process initiated, (2) offer an awareness of the residency space through non-human sensitivities, (3) and (when possible) develop space interventions which enhance biodiversity as a temporary or permanent “residence for non-humans”.

Bio| Paula Bruna é licenciada em Belas Artes pela Universidade de Barcelona, licenciada em Ciências Ambientais pela Universidade Autónoma de Barcelona, e mestre em Ecologia pela Universidade Autónoma de Barcelona. Trabalhou como ambientalista (especializada em ecologia, políticas ambientais e sustentabilidade) e é atualmente candidata ao doutoramento em Estudos Avançados em Produções Artísticas na Universidade de Barcelona. O enquadramento da sua investigação artística remete para o estudo dos conflitos ecológicos sobre as sociedades contemporâneas. A partir de referências e conceitos de ecologia política e economia ecológica, Paula está interessada na luta entre um sistema socioeconómico baseado no crescimento contínuo e a natureza finita do ambiente. Nos últimos anos, tem participado em vários eventos e exposições, entre os quais se destacam: Notes on Landscape (Kunstraum Lakeside; Klagenfurt, Áustria), After the end of the world (CCCB; Barcelona, Espanha), Aplec Saó (Center d’Art i Natura; Farrera, Espanha) e Projector International Videoart Festival (Espacio Oculto; Madrid, Espanha). O seu trabalho foi selecionado em concursos como a bolsa Guasch Coranty para investigação artística, a bolsa La Escocesa para investigação artística e experimentação, e o XX Concurso Nacional de Artes Plásticas Universidade-Universidade de Sevilha.

Paula Bruna holds a degree in fine arts from the University of Barcelona, a degree in environmental sciences from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and a master’s degree in ecology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. She has worked as an environmentalist (specialized in ecology, environmental policies and sustainability) and she is currently a PhD candidate in Advanced Studies in Artistic Productions at the University of Barcelona. The framework of her artistic research is the study of the ecological conflicts on contemporary societies. Taking concepts from political ecology and ecological economy as a reference, Paula is interested in the struggle between a socioeconomic system based on continuous growth and the finite nature of the environment. In recent years she has participated in several events and exhibitions, among which highlights: Notes on Landscape (Kunstraum Lakeside; Klagenfurt, Austria), After the end of the world (CCCB; Barcelona, Spain), Aplec Saó (Center d’Art i Natura; Farrera, Spain) and Projector International Videoart Festival (Espacio Oculto; Madrid, Spain). Her work has been selected in competitions such as the Guasch Coranty grant for artistic research, La Escocesa grant for artistic research and experimentation, and the XX National Contest of Plastic Arts University of Seville.
