As a palimpsest this exhibition explores the investigation of / by art in overlapping layers with some freedom of content juxtaposition. The word palimpsest is derived from the Greek and means something like scraping or scratching to do on top. This was a technique widely used in the Middle Ages, where religious texts were written on top of other older texts, which were devalued as an object of knowledge to be preserved. This technique of writing on papyrus or treated animal skin has been known since Classical Antiquity, where the logic of cleaning the support in an erasure and sometimes folding of the base sheet to re-enter new information began. There are famous palimpsests, such as that of Archimedes, who brought us lost knowledge, until today’s technologies are able to decipher the basic diagrams of mathematical ideas, which in addition to a drawing memory in the sand also inscribed on a leather that was later reused to accumulate more knowledge of another nature.
This project, palimpsest, is organized around the meeting of national and international artists and their explorations, thinking and works, which result from a period of residency at Cultivamos Cultura, S. Luís where intersections of other collaborating artists are introduced with ISCE Douro in Penafiel. The exhibition turns the Museum’s gallery into a laboratory of aesthetic experiences where connections and traces emerge and become matter and emotion. As information of various orders and natures that simultaneously emerge and materialize emotions and thoughts, ideas and images is cumulatively inscribed simultaneously in this exhibition proposal, the public can also feel the statement of an exercise of that order.
The diversity of forms and materials in the eclectic multiplicity of expression languages, or thematic subjects, carried out in the same space, at different times (except for some group projects) and by different people, proposes a reflection on memory, art, construction, accumulation and vestige, bringing the purpose of existence of the Museum itself closer to the logic of building the idea of palimpsest as an expository experience.
Como um palimpsesto esta exposição explora a investigação de/pela arte em camadas sobrepostas com alguma liberdade de justaposição de conteúdos. A palavra palimpsesto deriva do grego e significa algo como raspar ou riscar para fazer por cima. Esta era uma técnica muito usada na Idade Média, onde textos religiosos eram escritos por cima de outros textos mais antigos, que eram desvalorizados como objeto de conhecimento a ser preservado. Esta técnica de escrever sobre papiro ou pele de animais tratada é conhecida desde a Antiguidade Clássica, onde se iniciou a lógica de ir limpando o suporte num apagamento e por vezes dobragem da ‘folha’ base para reinscrição de nova informação. Existem palimpsestos famosos, como o de Arquimedes, que nos trouxeram conhecimento perdido, até as tecnologias da atualidade conseguirem decifrar os diagramas base das ideias matemáticas, que além duma memória de desenho na areia também se inscreverem num couro que foi reutilizado mais tarde para acumular mais conhecimento de outra natureza.
Este projeto, palimpsesto, é organizado em torno do encontro de artistas nacionais e internacionais e suas explorações plásticas, pensamento e obras, que resultam de um período de residência na Associação Cultural Cultivamos Cultura, S. Luís onde se introduzem interseções de outros artistas que colaboram com o ISCE Douro em Penafiel. A exposição torna a galeria do Museu num laboratório de experiências estéticas onde as conexões e vestígios emergem e se tornam matéria e emoção. Como na memória se inscrevem simultaneamente cumulativamente informações de várias ordens e naturezas que emergem e se materializam emoções e pensamentos, ideias e imagens, também nesta proposta expositiva o público pode sentir o enunciado de um exercício dessa ordem.
A diversidade de formas e matérias na multiplicidade eclética de linguagens de expressão, ou assuntos temáticos, realizadas num mesmo espaço, em tempos distintos (salvo alguns projetos de grupo) e por pessoas distintas, propõe uma reflexão sobre memória, arte, construção, acumulação e vestígio, aproximando o propósito de existência do próprio Museu na lógica de construção da ideia do palimpsesto como experiência expositiva.
